Companies that give back

by: Amy White

Companies that give backIf you're the kind of person who spends as much time volunteering as you do working, then you should work for a company that gives back as much as you do. The good news is that more and more companies are making it a point to raise money and donate to causes that you might support in your private life.

Check out these four companies with a conscience.

Avon

Some of the causes Avon supports: the environment, breast cancer research, domestic violence awareness, women's rights Avon may be best known for its makeup, but the beauty and wellness company has larger goals in mind. Avon's mission is "to improve the lives of women, globally." They do this by supporting cancer research and prevention measures, sponsoring domestic violence awareness campaigns and providing emergency disaster relief to those affected by September 11th, the Iraq war, Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 tsunami. They also improve the lives of women by giving them the opportunity to not only be financially independent, but to start and manage their own businesses.

Chipotle

Some of the causes Chipotle supports: sustainable agriculture, family farms, ethical treatment of farmed animals, the environment This mission of this restaurant is simple; Chipotle provides customers "food with integrity." Founder Steve Ells, after realizing how animals were treated in slaughterhouses, decided to make a change in how he brought his ingredients. Now, he travels across the country visiting family farms, finding only the best and most naturally raised foods to supply his restaurants. All Chipotle restaurants serve food that is almost entirely sustainable, naturally raised and hormone-free.

Harris Teeter

Some of the causes Harris Teeter supports: sustainability, the environment, community involvement This food market, located mainly in the Southeast, strives to be environmentally friendly in all areas. Harris Teeter works to make sure that not only the food they provide is sustainable, but that the ways things are packaged, shipped and sold are good for the environment as well. They also support local organizations and work to eliminate hunger (by donating to local food banks), educate children and provide immediate community assistance when needed.

Some of the causes Chick-fil-A supports: affordable college education, foster homes The WinShape Foundation, created in 1984 by the founders of Chick-fil-A, is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping "shape winners." One of the main causes the company champions is the creation and support of foster homes. There are now 11 WinShape foster homes located across the United States and even some in Brazil. The foundation also offers graduating high school students a special scholarship to Berry College in Georgia.
