First week as an intern and let me just say I can't wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store. But before I get into all that, let me rewind and formally introduce myself. I'm Ashley Robinson, a rising senior at Virginia Commonwealth University studying Mass Communications and I am a Snagajob content intern for the summer. I will be posting weekly to update you guys on what I'm learning and how my experience is going.
I first heard about Snagajob the summer of my college freshman year. The hunt for a summer job was becoming brutal and I searched with them because I knew they had jobs for young folks like myself. Snagajob quickly got me a job at Captain D's and I ended up working there for a year. Who would’ve thought eventually I would be working for Snagajob itself?
This first week has been amazing. They say first impressions are everything and I am definitely impressed. The first thing that stood out to me was the office environment. It's super team-oriented, casual, and fun! That came as a huge surprise to me since my internships in the past were pretty conservative and stuffy. As a bonus, a gelati truck comes to our building every week – I have a major sweet tooth. That is just a sample of all the awesomeness here. It's great that my fellow interns are all really nice and outgoing too.
More importantly, I feel like I'm going to learn so much here and have a lot to add to my resume by the end of the summer. As we all know, interns have the stereotype of being assigned meaningless tasks. It's comforting to see that won't be the case. Meeting my manager, Kim, for the first time was exciting and nerve-wracking. However, within 15 seconds of talking to her all my nerves went away. She is so enthusiastic that it's contagious. Everyone here is willing to help you out and offer advice. It's like they want to see you succeed, which is really motivating. I just hope I don't disappoint, you know?
Every job I have ever had was an hourly-paying position. Heck, 75 percent of the country is paid by the hour too. I like to think of us as the backbone of America. Interning with Snagajob will give me a glimpse behind-the-scenes to see how the industry works. It's cool to see it from both perspectives.
Another benefit of being an intern at Snagajob is they sign all the interns up for YRichmond, which is a program to bring together interns and young professionals in the Richmond area. You get to network with them and go to fun events around Richmond for free! I just went to a Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball game yesterday after work (we won) with the organization. It's great to step outside my comfort zone, meet new people, and experience everything Richmond has to offer.
