Advice from Snagajob members who got hired
Our members reached out to Snagajob on Facebook to tell us that following up on job applications really works!
Mechelle says:
“It works, I applied for a job last year and got a call back within a week.
You just can’t give up hope. Also, it’s always a good idea to call the company or stop by and talk to a manager. Be aggressive, but not to the point where they will get annoyed; meaning not multiple calls a week or going by the store more than once a week. (It’s been happening at my place of work and my manager is super annoyed.)
Also, I’ve been watching my manager load applications all week, and we get about 20 notices a day. This is not including the one’s that come directly through our company, and the people who walk in and fill an application out. It’s a long process; and again don’t lose hope."
Christopher says:
"If you just apply, you probably wont get hired.
I worked for Stein Mart and found out about the job on Snagajob. You have to apply then go to the location and talk to the manager. Drop off a card with a cell number attached to it.
I applied and turned in my number to the manager at Stein Mart, she liked me but lost my number so I called back. When I talked to her a second time she had me in for an interview and was hired the next day. Putting in an application is just the first step. Drop by once a week so your fresh in their minds.”
Thank you Mechelle and Chris for sharing your advice!
Have a story to share? Need help or encouragement? We’d love to hear from you!

I AM LOOKING FOR A JOB, I AM 49 YEARS OLD. IT IS HARD I THINK MAYBE I AM TOO OLD LETS HOPE NOT. PLEASE HIRE ME I AM A GOOD WORKER
I am 58 and if you are too old, what hope do I have? Maybe 2012 will be our lucky year.
Well, if you think 49 is old than what about me, I am 60 and lost my job almost 2 years ago. How do you start over at such a mature age? Interviewing is hard because when you meet with the interviewer they know you are mature…..no discrimination??????? That is questionable!!!!!
I have been looking for a job for a year and a half. My problem too is age. Granted me and my husband have social security income but in this economy it definitly isn’t enough. I would like to see companies hire more senior citizens.
How can you follow up after you’ve applied when a lot of job post say “Do not contact this employer”, or “no calls”……?
Unfortunately, you can’t. Or you shouldn’t – because doing so will tell the employer you either didn’t read the directions or didn’t follow them. Check out this article for more in-depth follow up advice: http://www.snagajob.com/resources/when-to-follow-up-on-job-applications/
The way i understand it,is the reason why you fill out applications on line is because so many people are looking for a job,the manager doesnt have time to talk and weed thru 80 applicants and applications a day.So i would suspect that if you are going in and bothering these managers on work hours would put you at risk of not getting hired.i would only go into follow up if the job is a walk in application.and there are only a handful that still do that.by the way i havent been able to find a job in 4 years.still lookin.
Hi Clifford! If you are uncomfortable with following up in person, have you thought about calling as a way to follow up instead? Employers tell us that following up is a critical part of the job search process, but is often overlooked.
I have followed up on applications at places I’ve applied to and most of the answers I get is ” We’re not hiring right now, but always accepting applications”. It’s hard to tell when a place is hiring. Another answer I got about my application is that I didn’t pass the assessment part of the hiring process. It sure is hard to find a job when you’re being judged by some test. Thanks for letting me vent.
i need a job this site is really not helping as much as it looks no calls from jobs at all just tellamark because of this site
some one help me out if that is what u say u do
a very hard worker looking for a way to provide for his wife and soon to be son
Sorry to hear about your frustrations! Be sure to double and triple check your applications for spelling and grammar errors. It is always a good idea to have someone you trust look it over, you may not have realized you missed something (it happens to me all the time). Good luck with your job search! I am 59 years old and have lots of legal and admin/customer service experience. Sometimes I am beginning to think that companies do not want to hire me because I am too old and that they want the younger workers so that they can pay them less.
I’m sorry to hear that, Don. Perhaps you might find some helpful tips in this article http://www.snagajob.com/resources/being-overqualified/
I am also in my 50′s. Have had a few interviews, did follow up calls only to be told, ” We said we will call “, so how long do you sit and wait ?
Good luck – but NEVER sit and wait! Hope for the best, but always keep applying until you’ve found something.
A job I applied for said they were collecting and reviewing apps over the next 3 weeks and they would be in touch as needed. Follow up or no?
Hi Emily! Great question. You can follow up by contacting them to make sure they have received your application and to ask if they have any questions for you. If they specifically asked you to not contact them, then don’t. If not, go for it!
OK about following up on your application. I have filled out hundreds of applications online, but most of the time the job description does not give the name of the hiring manager or any other information significant enough to respond to. And I have gone in personally to give my resume and they have told me to go apply on their web site. At times it can be so frustrating when you count up all the resumes and applications sent following job descriptions.
hai,i am mr sunil.i am looking a job in NY.as ma security guard.can u help 4 it.i am waiting 4 ur positive reply.so do the needfull 4 me as soon as possible.
I’ve been looking for a job for about 4 months and still no luck. If I wanted to follow up over the phone what questions should I ask?
Hi Christina! You just need to ask for the manager and then let them know that you applied online and are checking to make sure they received your application. It is great that you are following up on your applications. I hear from many of our hired members, who tell me that following up is why they got hired. Have you thought about following up in person? We talked to a major national employer who told us that following up in person is very effective. Take a look at this article: http://www.snagajob.com/resources/following-up-in-person/ and let me know if you have any questions!
