Getting organized can keep your job search on track

by: Kim Costa

I recently talked to Adrianne, who got just got hired at Hertz. Something that really helped her throughout the job search process was her organization.

Adrianne kept a notebook next to her computer where she wrote down every job she applied to. She kept a log of the date, the company, the position and any additional details that would help in her follow-up. After following up on her applications, she would then update the notebook with who she talked to, the date she followed up and any information they gave her.

Take Andrea’s lead

In a competitive job market, you may find yourself applying to jobs for awhile before the right job comes around. By keeping a log of every position and all details, you will make it easier for yourself to follow up and track your progress. It can be something as simple as:

Date
Company
Job title
Contact information
Date followed up
Additional details

This will also help if you get called in for an interview weeks after applying – you may have forgotten you even applied!

Taking an organized approach to your job search will not only help you keep your sanity, it will also help you remember what happened every step of the way.

I’ve been doing this for the past year and its gotten me nowhere. However, when I apply for cash assistance benefits from Public Assistance I want to show them all the jobs I have applied for and never heard back from. Every time I follow up with a job application I get one of three responses; either the position has been filled, they have decided to pursue another applicant or they haven’t gotten around to calling anyone yet. and a follow up with those jobs result in then telling me that the position being filled. At my age, I know the discrimination is there, but there is nothing I can do about that. I’ll just keep applying for job after job, and I’ll keep being discriminated against because of my age. Also, many employers are only hiring Veterans and minorities which puts me at a great disadvantage. Jobs today are only for the chosen few.

I also have tried Cragi’s list, most of it is either scams or places that want you to sign up for schooling. I am totally agreeing with Sabrina, so much discrimination out there now.

Yes discrimination does still exist, being 58 years old I have also been dealing with it. Remember the companies want to hire the cheapest help with the least amount of benefits. Usually the younger ones are willing to work for less and don’t care so much about benefits. The days of loyalty are gone and it’s all about the bottom line. Welcome to the times we live in.

You hit the nail on the head. I am in the same position. I actually was forced to retire from my previous job of 24 years due to my age, wages and the benefits that I had coming to me. My own union told me to take my retirement before they found reason to fire me. The job market is so bad. Guess all one can do is keep trying but it becomes depressing after a while.

This is a very great idea because it helps the person to be more organized in a way that it will help the person who applied for a job in handy just in case. Things happen so just in case it is good to be organized than not to be organized. Excellent idea! Way to go!

Hi Crystal! I am sorry to hear you aren’t having much luck. We take down job postings as soon as we are informed the position has been filled. Have you been following up on your applications? This may seem small, but it can make a huge difference in your job search.
