How Reisha was able to set herself apart

by: Kim Costa

We’re seeing that many employers are holding group interviews for seasonal positions. This may be because they have a high number of openings during the holiday season, they want to see how you interact with other potential teammates or they are trying to save time by conducting as many interviews as possible during a set amount of time. Whatever the reason, standing out from everyone else is extremely important while taking place in a group interview.

Reisha was recently hired by Kohl’s for a holiday position! Go Reisha! Her new position will help out with her college tuition.

Reisha was one of nine candidates in a group interview. The format of the interview was simple – sit around in a circle and everyone answer the same question. The only rule was that you were not allowed to use the same answer as the person in front of you.

Sound scary? Not for Reisha. While everyone else answered the questions with the same tone as the people in front of them (ex: I want to work here because I need a job; I want to work here because I am looking for a place to work over the holidays; I want to work here because I could use the money) Reisha was able to stand out by making sure her answer was professional, different and really addressed the company itself:

I want to work here because I admire your staff’s friendliness and I want to be a part of that.

Reisha made sure all of her answers were different from the other candidates so she wouldn’t blend in with everyone else. When one person has to interview nine people it may be hard to separate each person, unless you put in the effort to make yourself look more professional than the rest.

Reisha’s advice for job seekers:

Never give up. You may not be qualified for a position at one place but another place is still waiting on you to apply. Go for it and good luck!

Good luck in your new position, Reisha! They are lucky to have you.

Well done! Good answer :) . I’m having interview fever for the last 4 weeks since I’ve sign up with Snagajob! So far I had 5 interview, I have been looking for over a month now. I had 1 offer for $11.00 an hour but with my 10 years experience is not going to even cover my gas, clothing, and time. Maybe Target will pay more.

    Thanks Kim,

I had an interview with Target today. Hopefully I’ll have a job offer from them since I work for them before and I’ve learn a lot from working at Target in the past. I wanted to come back to Target and use my skills that I have learn from my last employer.

Linda I have 20 plus yrs. as a medical secretary/front desk receptionist. I have been out of the workforce for 3yrs. now. I have been seeking employment for the past 16 months now. I have not been as lucky as you in obtaining as many interviews as you. After taking the time now to read some articles on interviewing tips, do’s & don’ts and what not to put on my resume I see what I have been doing wrong! I feel that you are selling yourself short by not taking the position offering you $11.00 an hour! Take it while you can and continue interviewing on your own time for a better salary. You don’t have to let the employer know that you are still interviewing for a position that pays more. Just make sure that you always give an employer 2wks. notice. This is not just a courtesy but shows that although you are leaving you have good work ethics. I give this advice because I never had a problem getting an interview. When I did I always received the position or was given a 2nd interview, where I always nailed it! So good luck I hope you take this advice into consideration! I wish you well.

Hi Diana! I’m glad you found our videos helpful. A second interview is always a good sign :) . Be prepared to meet different people and answer the same sort of questions as you did in the first interview. Also, you may be quizzed a bit more about your specific qualifications that fit into the position and how your schedule would work. Make sure you stay upbeat and follow all the rules you did in the first interview that made them call you back. Good luck and please let me know how it goes!

It’s also good to express yourself uniquely all throughout, that tells a company you have things all across the board that could be of use to them, now, or in a very near future.
