How to get a summer job

by: Amy White

The shortlist of stuff you need to do to get a job this summer

If you're trying to get a summer job, the clock is ticking. Want to know how to get a summer job? Here it is, short and sweet (with links for those of you who want more in-depth info).

1) Start searching now. Employers are starting to hire now, and you should be looking now. Unless you want to compete for whatever jobs are left when everyone else gets out for summer break, do yourself a favor and look for the right jobs, right now. Learn more about finding a summer job or search now!

2) Focus on your strengths. Completely flexible schedule? Social media savvy? People person? Highly organized? Make sure potential employers know it. Even if you haven't had a job before, you have strong points as an employee. If you are having trouble figuring out what they are, ask your friends and family for input. Learn more about selling your strengths.

3) Present yourself well. Having an error-free job application and showing up on time and well-dressed to interviews is no longer a way to stand out, it's a way to make sure you don't get eliminated up front. There is a lot of competition for jobs, don't give employers any reason to overlook you, or they will. Learn more about applications and interviews.

4) Don't just search, ask. Make sure your family, friends and anyone else you can think of knows that you're looking for a job. You never know when knowing the right person will lead to a job. And if you had a job last summer, your last job should be your first stop; many managers are happy to hire an employee whom they know and won't have to spend time training.

If you're ready, find a summer job now! Or you can check out all our summer job articles and teen job articles for more advice.

      Hey Josephine,

I read something on this site that said you could bring a copy of your application to the interview along with your resume. You could always do that! There are also great resume making programs and templates. Here’s one: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.squawkfox.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/resume_template_functional_free_resume_templates10.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.squawkfox.com/2009/04/29/free-resume-template/&usg=__Jx8ETEqWyhglZ9DDjrNBJsUsvIM=&h=522&w=480&sz=83&hl=en&start=0&sig2=8jGMiHPKKklR7xoqhQiZgQ&zoom=1&tbnid=VFyHG8m7kiGJ3M:&tbnh=132&tbnw=121&ei=52UcTp-DG4Lf0QGb_MS2Bw&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dresume%2Btemplates%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1366%26bih%3D590%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=724&vpy=106&dur=1947&hovh=234&hovw=215&tx=131&ty=145&page=1&ndsp=28&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0

I already have a night shift job at a restaraunt part time. I am in college monday thru friday from 9am to 1pm. I am actively seeking a second job to supplement my income. I don’t have any degree’s or any major long term skills. What type of job should i look for other than a fast food restaraunt?

You could consider a restaurant that focuses on lunch and dinner, or a retail job that would give you afternoon shifts. Don’t discount that restaurant experience you’re racking up right now, it’s useful in a variety of industries! http://www.snagajob.com/resources/restaurant-jobs-a-recipe-for-success/ Good luck with school and your job search!

I have no experience, but I have done volunteer work in Summer 2008 and 2009 and Winter 2010. I would love to have a summer job. Working as a lifeguard at a local park would be nice. Please help me find a summer job.
    Thank You.

      Hi Darian,

you’ll probably need to be certified in order to be a lifeguard, and it’s late in the season to pursue that. If you think you’ll want to lifeguard next year, consider getting certified at the end of this summer. In the meantime, work all that great volunteer expereince into a stellar resume, and start applying to part-time jobs!

If you look into the Red Cross you can get certified find local parks and pools that certify life guards. I would also recommend maybe looking into the YMCA after the off season. They also have good benefits.

Hi. I am looking for a job and im 16. I havent done many community hours and I had a side job cleaning my neighbors office where she works in but it wasn’t really a legit job can i put this as an expierence?

Absolutely, Esther. This is experience and should be viewed by employers as such. If your neighbor will allow you to list him or her as a reference, that’s even better.

I am looking for a summer job because there are camps and trips I want to go on next summer. The problem is I am 14 but will be turning 15 on July 23rd. I am having trouble finding businesses that that will hire a 14 year old.

Hello! I was looking for a summer job. I think this is kind of late but I’ll try anyways. I am good with computers, i can build and fix. So the thing is I speak Russian, so I do have Russian accent. Is there any summer jobs for me? Or is it late? It’s like August. By the way, i am also learning with web development, i am good with HTML and CSS. Can make simple web page, set up a server. I am 17 years old.
    Thanks!

The bad news is that its way late to look for a summer job… The good news is that it’s time to start looking for back to school jobs! Given your technical skills, you may want to consider electronic retail (radio shack, hhgregg, best buy, target, etc) or another electronics specialist in your area who can offer part-time hours. Good luck!
