How to overcome shyness in a job interview

by: Kim Costa

Chelsea asked us on Twitter:

The biggest thing I worry about for interviews, is that I come off a bit shy and soft spoken. Any tips on overcoming this?

Hi Chelsea – Great question! Interviewers do care about how you present yourself, especially when applying for a customer service position. You need to show them that you are comfortable meeting and interacting with new people.

The more confident you are with your interview skills, the less shy you will appear. One of the best things you can do is practice with a friend or family member. Find someone you trust and that you know will give you honest feedback.

Have the person interviewing you ask the most common questions, including “Tell me about yourself“, “Where do you see yourself in five years?“, “Why do you want to work here?” and “What are your weaknesses?“ Being prepared for the common questions will help you perfect your answers, which will make you look (and feel) self assured. Also, ask them to throw you a few curve balls, such as “What is your favorite movie and why?” so you can be prepared to think quickly without stumbling over your answer.

Be sure to ask them what improvements you could make. I’ve done this before and was surprised to know that I kept playing with my hair, which was a big distraction. You may have a bad habit that you don’t realize.

Keep practicing until you are comfortable with your answers and are ready to blow the interview out of the water!

I always get nervous when it comes to interviews. I find taking a few deep breaths before the interview helps.

well i think that is not the way to go. Your gonna pretend your not nervous or scared at the interview is wrong. be yourself. yea sure you dont want to sit their playing with your hair or curling your finger around and around but be you. they dont want to see that your one person then find out your someone else. their are lil tricks tho..I seem to find my self squeezing my toes so im not moving anything that they can see. it also shows your not holding your hands and sitting their like a child..I have an interview Friday and hoping things will turn out..good luck with things.

Hi Elizebeth! By practicing your interview skills you will become more confident, which means you will not have to pretend about being scared. Being yourself is important! I like the toe trick, this way you won’t distract the interviewer! Good luck with your interview and let us know how it goes!

Hi Elizabeth! That is a great question. While getting an interview is very exciting (congrats!) it can also be very nerve-racking. The best thing is to just practice Interviewing to build your confidence. also, the toe thing seems to be really a good idea. I will try it on my next interview.
