Put on your party hats and bust out your resume because tomorrow, March 8, is National Proofreading Day and what could be a better reminder to double check your resume?
National Proofreading Day is all about promoting error-free writing. As a writer and job search expert, I want to share the real value of proofreading with you. Although it may not be much fun, proofreading is a valuable thing to do because it only takes a moment to do and can really make a difference in getting your resume noticed for all of the right reasons.
Check out these three reasons to proofread your resume:
- It shows prospective employers that you care about your work and that you really do have an eye for detail.
- A mistake-riddled resume could cost you a job and nobody wants that.
- It's quick, easy and makes you look more professional.
Now that you know all of the great things proofreading can do for you, I'm sure you're eager to get started checking your work for errors. Keep an eye out for misspelled words, misplaced punctuation and grammatical errors; these are the most common mistakes we see job seekers make.
Once you have given your work a good looking over it's always helpful to have someone else take a look because they're more likely to catch things that you missed. If you don't have someone around who can help, try walking away for a while. After looking at something for a while things can get fuzzy so it helps to give yourself some time to decompress. When you come back your more likely to catch any errors you may have missed.
Proofreading is especially important when it comes to your job search. You don't want something like a simple mistake or two to get in the way of great opportunities. So take a few minutes to celebrate National Proofreading Day and double check your resume.
