Linda got in touch with us on Facebook and asked:
“I just got laid off from a job I loved. I feel so discouraged. How do I feel more confident that anyone else would want to hire me?”
Hi, Linda. I’m really sorry to hear that. The bad news is that you got laid off from a job you love; the good news is that you know what kind of work you love to do. A lot of people don’t have that figured out. Now that you know, you can go after that same type of job again.
Unless you were laid off for performance issues, don’t take it personally or let it shake your confidence. Ask your last manager and a coworker for a reference, and hit the ground running as you look for the next job you’ll love.
If you were let go for less than awesome performance, take this as an opportunity to improve as an employee so the new-and-improved you can get hired for a similar position and get back to loving what you do. If you find it hard to discuss why you left your last job in interviews, check out our advice for explaining why you were fired – it’s not quite the same as explaining why you were laid off, but it might help.
I know it sounds like a line, but knowing what you love to do is huge – don’t undervalue that! (Or yourself!)
