Today we are going to go over the few steps you need to do if you are interested in becoming a professional truck driver.
Trucking can be an awesome job, but it’s overlooked by many people. Because it can be forgotten about, truck drivers are often in high demand.
What skills should a truck drive have?
The federal government regulates that truck drivers must have good hearing, vision and health. In addition, drivers should have exceptional hand-eye coordination and a high stamina, as they can expect to be spending days at a time on the road.
How much does a commercial truck driver make?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median income for tractor-trailer drivers in 2010 was around $18 and hour or $37,000 a year.
Do I need a clean driving record?
Parking tickets? Sure, OK. Reckless driving? No, not so much. For companies to trust you with their freight, they’ll have to be confident that you can get it from Virginia to California without incident. Having several moving violations or a conviction for driving under the influence (DUI) will probably disqualify you from working for most companies.
How do I get my Commercial Driver's License?
If you want to drive a vehicle that is over 26,000 pounds or that will transport hazardous materials, you must get your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
The first thing you should do is to find a truck driving school. It won't be free, but it will make the process much easier. A word of warning: there are a ton of schools that offer to put you on the path to getting your CDL. Do your research and make sure you aren’t getting hustled. The American Trucking Association (ATA) is a great source of information to get you started.
There are federal guidelines for CDL requirements, but each state has its own rules. You’ll need to verify with the Department of Motor Vehicles what those specific laws are in your state. Generally, though, you’ll need to pass a written exam about laws and equipment, conduct a pre-trip vehicle inspection and demonstrate your driving skills. The easiest way to do this is to attend a driving school. It won’t be free, but it will make the process much easier.
It may sound like a lot, but once you have your CDL you are ready to get on the road.
