Who’s hiring veterans (besides Walmart)?

by: Kim Costa

Walmart recently announced their new initiative to hire 100,000 veterans over the next five years. Ambitious? Yes. Inspiring? Definitely. The program will offer jobs to veterans who have been honorably discharged within the past 12 months.

Walmart’s U.S. president and CEO told the National Retail Federation that: “Sadly, too many of those who fought for us abroad now find themselves fighting for jobs at home. Not every returning veteran wants to work in retail. But every veteran who does will have a place to go.”

While no new positions will be created, Walmart will give preference to a veteran when store openings are available.

Being a veteran is something to be proud of and Snagajob is also determined to help you get hired. Check out this article, which outlines qualities veterans have that make them a great hire (and should really be emphasized on your resume).

Military experience gives you something that can really help you stand out and get noticed. It has been drilled into you to be organized, punctual and professional. These things all make you the ideal employee and should not be ignored on your applications.

Walmart isn’t the place for you? Be sure to check out employers including Home Depot, Verizon, 7-Eleven , Schneider National and UPS. They are all known for hiring veterans.

Good luck with your job search and thank you for your service!

It shouldnt be there for vets that only been out for 12 months. It should be for all vets. I have talked to several employers ( Home Depot especially) And no one will hire a vet outside of 12 months. Even with a Honorable Discharge. I’ve been out since 07. I’ve worked for a grocery store for 3 years then I had to quit to do them not wanting to work with me and my other job. Which is very understandable but hey thats how things go.. My other job fired me for running out of food.. Thats right running out of food and ever since I got fired I have been looking for work. I havent found not one job.. Heck I even went to the county jail and the pysc… tells them I am not fit for doing the job… I WAS A MARINE! How can I not but right for the job. But things happen for a reason and I’m still wondering. I’ve put several apps out and havent gotten a response. Please do you have any other info that I might not be doing right?

Hi Stephen! I am sorry to hear about your situation. Have you thought about looking into security companies? Employers like United Protection Service prefer military experience with their job applicants. Check out them (and others) at the end of this article: http://www.snagajob.com/resources/why-vets-make-great-hires/. The article outlines things you should be highlighting on your resumes and interviews. Good luck and thank you for your service!
