Why is there a job posted if they’re not hiring?

by: Amy White

Getting hired when an employer isn't hiringSnagajob members sometimes report that when they follow up on a job application, the employer says the company isn’t hiring. Understandably that sometimes leaves people confused and irritated – why post a job that’s not available? But it’s not a waste of time to apply to these jobs; employers have unpredictable hiring needs, and we have heard from many members in the middle of a long, tough job search who randomly got a job offer from an application they’d all but forgotten they submitted.

Will it definitely happen? Just like all job applications, there are no guarantees.

Is it pretty cool to get an offer out of nowhere? Members like Julie tell us it is!

Julie says:

“Don’t give up job seekers, apply for everything. I got the job I wanted, 3 months after I applied. My employer says they advertise for jobs, even when they don’t need someone, then SAVE the resumes until they are ready to hire. Before that, I got a call back on a job I had applied for 6 months earlier. (I just wasn’t ready to commit at the time they called back.)

See? So don’t give up! I say, as a strategy, apply daily to different job sites, until you get one. I recommend Snagajob to anyone trying to find one. REALLY!”

Whether an employer says they’re hiring immediately or not, don’t stop applying after you’ve applied to any particular job. With the market as tough as it is, even jobs you’re a shoe-in for aren’t a sure thing. Follow the basic steps to get hired, and do your best to stay positive!

Not quite – we’re displaying jobs that employers have posted to fill potential hiring needs, and people are getting hired by applying! But if you prefer to stay away from those types of posts look for smaller businesses listed in your area, they’re less likely to have an “always accepting” policy. Let me know if there’s anything I can explain further for you – I’m glad to!

Amy, that’s all fine and dandy when you’re not in desperate need of a job NOW! It’s so time consuming filling out spplications, submitting your resume thinking this company you have applied to is actually hiring. The worse part is anymore companies don’t want you to apply within. They only accept applications on line. In addition to that, 9 times out of 10 there isn’t any contact information to follow up with your application. So, you spend time researching to find a contact name and number and get a response “we are not hiring right now.” talk about frustration, time wasted and even more depression!!! I need a job now! In three months or six months from now I will probably be living on the streets because by this time I’ve lost everything I own. This is not a good process for people like myself and I’m sure there are a lot of us out there.

Hi Raymond, employers request that those jobs be left open, so it’s not about ad space. They are legitimately looking for folks to fill positions, whether they are available immediately or not – hope that helps!

Once again capitalism rears it’s ugly head. PLEASE JUST BE HONEST! The people aren’t hiring, BUT people who run and manage the websites still need their jobs so they NEED to post jobs. Even if they aren’t hiring. Granted SOMETIMES following up can help you. But most of this stuff is mularkey. There’s a reason we keep hearing the job market is bad yet, seems to have been no slump in the amount of job POSTINGS. Don’t listen to someone who works for a job site. Pay attention to the numbers. And Amy this is not an attack on you, I’m sure you’re a lovely lady who’s just being paid to do damage control. You need your job so I understand. But you and I both no this is bs.

            Leigh,
Capitalism is not why your not getting a job, without it there would literaly be no job’s. The reason your not getting a job is not that at all. Here’s the thing, the reason your not getting this job is either you, your employer, or this website.
You do not have any proof that it’s any one of those in specific so lets not start laying out blame. Also I do agree that I think that there are too many jobs listed that re not realy going to hire you. i think that the web site should have two lists one for application stockpiles for a future job, and one for people who need a job now.

All I can say is, even though I supposedly opted out I still get daily calls on my cell phone from so called “college recruiters”, which I have to pay for in minutes used. And it pisses me off! I also object to repeat listings, especially from insurance companies, rent-a-center places, payday loan outfits, fast food joints, etc. And then it seems that all of you guys are interconnected. I don’t know whom to trust. Really, I’ve given up on snagajob, career builders, simply hired, job search agent… you’re all the same. If not, I challenge you to refute what I’ve said.

Hi George – I absolutely understand why you are frustrated. You absolutely should NOT still be getting calls if you asked to be removed from the list. Make sure you clearly request to be placed on the Do Not Call list, and if you continue to hear from advertising partners, they may not be affiliated with Snagajob. But to make sure, please feel free to report the number, name of agency and rep to us and I’ll be glad to get more details if possible!

Hi Maldonado – we’re actively working to more clearly label the different types of job posts, but anything you encounter in our listings should have the potential to lead to a job. It can be hard to find ways to properly categorize all the different hiring needs of employers who work with us, and listings we pull from elsewhere in order to bring you the most opportunities we can. Does that answer your question? I want to be sure I haven’t left you hanging!

What’s more annoying to me is actually the opposite: employer websites that make you fill out a long application, but they only store it for a few months. If you’re still interested in working for them after that, you have to go through the whole process again. Very disrespectful of the applicant’s time! Why not just e-mail the applicant and ask if they’re still interested?

Hey, I was wondering if it was sometimes bad to do a follow up call. I had applied for a job at I had called them back a week later and they said that they haven’t looked at the applications yet, so then I had called them again next week and they sounded irritated. The reason I called two times was because they said that they were hiring people in October and that they would call me back for a interview when they were finished looking through all of the applications. It’s been almost four weeks and they haven’t called me yet. How long does it take them to look through the applications?

Hi Joseph, if the employer has said not to follow up, then don’t. Otherwise it should be a good idea. In the instance you’ve described it sounds like you were right on – the manager may have been feeling overwhelmed or having a rough day. Hi Deborah! You may want to check out public transportation in your area and expand your search to those places you can reach using alternative transit. You could also do an on foot job hunt in your area if you didn’t want to get options that are not within walking distance.

Displaying jobs that employers have previously posted and are no longer available is a backdoor-type tool used regularly be employment agencies. This really doesn’t work at snag-a-job level of job seeking. Internet sites have to step up to the reality of job availability. The fact that a company once had a position open at the ground floor level of employment seems a self-defeating tactic. It’s also ridiculous. I’m removing my availability from online job postings.

Perpetual job listers, like Petco, never even reply to applications submitted, yet you always find them listing stuff here. More corporate b.s. This site does not live up to expectations at all, which, as stated by others, is discouraging to people ACTUALLY trying to find work. Maybe Monster.com or one of the others has a better filtering system that makes sure the jobs actually exist.

Hi there! We’ve heard from seekers who’ve been hired at PetCo – so I do think they’re hiring applicants. Unfortunately, not hearing back is starting to be business as usual across the board for most job seekers. Unless they want to bring you in for an interview, you usually don’t hear back. We’re trying to communicate to the employers that we work with that job seekers want to hear back, even if it’s just an automated message letting you know that they got your application.

I have a big problem with this, it has to do with all the information on an employment application. If you are not looking why do you want to collect resume’s and employment applications, none of this stuff is secure, I know first hand about that. I have to spend money on things like Life Lock. Id thief is a real problem. And with an filled out employment application you have every thing you need. I been burned and its a time consuming mess to clean up.

signs posted ither on or near their facility. I, applied ,checked back aweek later tey said still looking at applications I, proceeded this process every week for four weeks with the same response. Finally I, was tired of being basically brushed off. So I,visited these facilites where I,applied in person. I, asked if they reviewed my application. They then proceeded to say oh we have not reviewd applications yet. I,asked why not it has been over four weeks.
Tey then replied to me that the positions are not actually open yet. I,asked if it had anything to do with our government wanting them to post positions in which they in return would recieve subsides? They would not directly respond to my question but unknowingly stated enough which led me to believe this is the case. needless to say I,am furious and frustrated with wasting my time on lying decieptfull employers and will NEVER VOTEfor any of those jack a—-!

Now i know that you are ad posters’ and are very busy and cannot police every single ad and make sure they are all up-to-date but if you can’t then maybe you should hire more ad posters yourselves here at Snagajob.com. As for your comment stating and i quote, “We update our postings as soon as we’re notified that a postion is no longer available.” Why is there always job postings up here that i’ve applied to continuously, followed up on and then ultimately told they are no longer hiring only to see that same posting reposted a week later? It doesn’t make sense to me how in over 130 job postings to jobs that teenagers do PART-TIME IN SCHOOL. I have not received at least one call back for an interview and partly due to the reason of no longer available.

Hi Kevin, it’s clear you’re really frustrated, and since I’ve personally experienced the stressful impact a long-term job search can have on someone, I’m not surprised. I hope that by publishing the censored version of your comment and responding, we can show you that we are honestly concerned about your feedback and sincerely want to help.

Are you following up on your applications? Our hired members tell us that was key for many of them, and if you do that you’ll immediately know whether the job listing is an immediate hiring opening or a potential hiring need. Some folks prefer to call before they even apply – that may be something you want to try. I understand why you’re angry, but we’re sharing job listings that the companies themselves have put out on the web or specifically asked that we post. We’re not putting up listings that couldn’t lead to a job, we’re trying to post all the valid, non-fraudulent listings that we find. many larger companies have a policy of always accepting applications, so if you find that process frustrating you may want to target the smaller businesses in your area; they tend to only post hiring notices when they have a specific need to fill. But those larger companies that are always accepting applications will tend to have more frequent opportunities, so it’s a trade off.

If the email you used to post your comment is also the mail address you’re using for your job search, you may find you have better results if you create a professional email address to use for your applications and resume: http://www.snagajob.com/resources/bad-email-addresses/

If you have any questions, or something I can help you with, please feel free to ask – we genuinely want to help with your job search.

It’s been a over a year, and I graduated in 2010, and I’m a honors student, I’ve called tons of hiring managers, and I get a load of lying **** back. Life has never been fair. We live in a world consumed by greed. Yes, many employers will post listings in case an employee quits, gets fired, etc. You have to do much work when looking for a job, and snag-a-job, like other businesses, market themselves to appeal. Remember life is not that simple. I have ‘wasted’ hours of time on this site, but I have also ‘wasted’ hours of time on employer websites, staffing services, and newspaper ads. Now, the good news, fellow job searchers, is that the last 3 interviews and 2 jobs that I am currently working, I found right here on snag-a-job. I did have to follow up on all 3 jobs, which was no more than calling to check on my application. I feel everyone’s frustration. Keep searching and remember to use every method and resource available. You will never find anything if you give up. Love.

Out of those fifty or more applications that I filled out, only one responded back: but I am grateful to say I did find a job, not from your website but from an honest resource thats truthful. This is absolutely ridiculous. I am not going to put in an application to a company thats not hiring for any position. Not only is it a big waste of time, you give eager people false hopes of getting jobs, which is pretty cruel considering thats going to be a persons livelyhood for a while. No matter hoe many times you debate it, its still not good to post jobs that arent even hiring, and if snagajob really wants to keep its members that get bombarded with useless fake ass, grammatically incorrect texts about fake colleges and have their inbox filled with useless banter about snagajob, you guys need to really rethink your game plan. Having void job offers is inconvienient and disrespectful, no matter how many times you try to back it up with “oh did you foolow up with the applicant?” or “maybe theyll be hiring soon”. It is stupid and useless to post a job listing thats not even hiring! I now think Ill stick to craigslist.

We really do hear from members who get hired months after applying so don’t give up on these positions! If you are getting calls and texts from our education partners, you did not opt out when registering. Ask they put you on the Do Not Call list. I have found the fact of “not hiring now” or “just taking applications at this time” to be the norm on most online job boards. I have kept filling them out and following up with phone calls. If I’m in the area I might stop in and introduce myself to the HR manager so they can, hopefully, remember a face the next time they get my app and follow-up call.

The times I have had success with getting an interview was when I found a job advertised online and called that business. Often I have been invited to come in and fill out a real paper application. Voila – I either am interviewed then or have an appointment set in a day or two.

This has led to my having to decide between three jobs in the past week. I have decided on one – it is full-time, near home with a very nice hourlly wage. The only time I was able to have an interview via an online application was with Ross; part-time, minimum wage and I wasn’t hired due to a misdemeanor in the past for protesting to save an old brick factory
that has now been turned into shops and restaurants that are hiring people like us. Ironic! And, they are still advertising as always.

So good luck to all – but don’t abandon the old way of getting hired. Use the Internet as the wonderful tool it is but I found that by combining it and “the old fashioned way” can lead to success!!

    It’s all for government reasons.

Honestly I say the same thing, If I take the 2 Hours ( some are really that long ) and Do not get an Interview then They should be sending me a check. Because Now they have MY information. Everything from my address to my SS#. Time is Money and the hours I spend filling out these retarded online applications is a joke. It takes ONE interview to get a job, sometimes even less. I constantly Go out asking about job openings and look and every time I get the same old .

” Go fill out our application online “, I do so even when they told me they were hiring and then I never hear anything. I always follow up on them as well. Some places I constantly see new employees working but they are never Hiring. I have been without a job for almost a year. And I fill out applications everywhere!

I’m on the verge of getting a case together and going to court to remove these jokes called online application. They should be against the law. A majority of them are never looked at. I have constantly been turned down when I was clearly more qualified but my Skin color was not to their liking.

    What the heck...
I filled out an application for Kohls on the Snagajob website. Fill out the questionaire and then it tells me that I did not met Kohls requirement so they did not send in my application. How rude is that. You guys did not inform me that Kohls was seeking for something specific all Snagajob did was say Kohls is hiring near you and to apply.

If you people knew at Snagajob that Kohls had a specific requirement why did you guys not put that in the posting with the job. I met all the regular requirements that the kohls job site listed but here you guys say I don't.

Is this how you at Snagajob treat your applicants who come here looking for jobs, filling out application and then you say" I did not meet the criteria so you will not send my application in." Well, as of today is my last day using Snagajob now I know why I am not getting jobs because you guys at Snagajob are not sending in the application. I will do my application the old fashion way and search for other sites that do care.

Should I at some point re apply for the position or should I try to go to the hotel itself? I am sure the hotel would tell me to go to there web site. Appreciate any feed back.

Hi Joe, our system sends a confirmation if you complete the application on Snagajob – if you went through a different process on the Marriott site they may not have replies set up. One thing I would suggest on future applications is checking carefully for errors and asking a friend to proof read your applications as well. Hiring managers tend to ignore applications with spelling mistakes: http://www.snagajob.com/resources/recruiter-rant-typos-and-your-resume/

I worked for a company in a temporary position last year. I knew from other employees that the company was planning on hiring another temporary employee for a permanent full time position. Even though the company was planning on hiring her, and did hire her, they still posted the job for at least a few days. Anyone who applied was just wasting their time, but there would be no way of knowing this without inside information.

Does this website offer to give out the locations number to make it earier to call to ask any questions to them? That would be great to know instead of me having to go on google and search each and every job i look up.

Hi Dayana! It is up to the employer whether or not they include their contact information on the job posting. If it is not there, then do a quick internet search to find it online. Good luck!

Hi Ella – I am sorry you are frustrated. If you are getting instant emails saying you are not a right fit for the job, you did not meet the employer’s requirements for the position. I know it’s annoying to fill out a long questionnaire and then be told you are not a good fit, but it will save you from being unhappy in a position you would not enjoy. This article explains: http://www.snagajob.com/resources/the-right-answer-to-assessment-questions/. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

But they’ll send you an email telling you that ten minutes after you send it.

it’s all computerized now.. i just took a 2 hour assessment and mock phone call application with T-mobile only to be told by a freaking computer that i didn’t qualify. so that’s that, end of my application until SIX MONTHS, nevermind the fact i’m perfectly capable and willing to do said job.

I dont believe that places are actually hiring. I went for a interview for a major oil change place for a job. The guy said they always have ads out that there hiring even though there not. He also said its cheaper than doing an ad once in a while. I think a lot of big businesses are a scam for jobs on big job boards. I believe there getting some kind of tax break or something from the government for posting jobs.

To all who read this: If you do not know someone in the company you are trying to get hired by then your chances of actually being hire is about 3%. This is the hiring age of friends and family who are clearly not qualified for the position but will get it and free OJT and you might be lucky to get an interview but will not be hired. I have never been hired when I used an employment site like snag a job. I found going directly to a companies web sit and find careers is the only time I have been hired. Funny how this has worked out.

There’s a legal case that is building up as I speak where job search sites like Snag-a-Job are REQUIRED to label companies that are ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS but not hiring. Right now, this site and the companies are just promoting “FALSE HOPE”.
