Video series: Why should we hire you?

by: Kim Costa
YouTube Preview Image

This week we will be taking on the dreaded "Why should we hire you?" job interview question.

If this question comes up in your interview, chances are it is one of the last questions you get asked. So, this may be your last chance to prove to the employer that you are their best option for the position.

Stay away from the desperate sounding answers. You want them to think that you want THIS job and not just ANY job:

Because I need a job so badly and I don't know what I will do if I don't get this.

You also want to stay away from cliched answers that don't give the employer a good idea of why you want to work for them:

Because I'm a hard worker and I want to work here.

Because I'd do a really good job.

Your best bet is to be specific. Tailor your qualifications with the job description:

I've worked in retail for about three years now and I know what level of service customers are expecting when they walk through the door. My experience makes me a great fit for this position and my personality fits in really well with everything you've told me about the company during this interview. I believe I can be very successful in this position and that we would work really well together.

Your answer to this question will stick out in employers’ minds, so you want to really show them that you are the best candidate for the position. You also want to stress just how much this company will fit in with your personality and strengths.

I’ve completed my application for Snagajob.com. My only concern is the jobs that are being shown to me are in Retail and Automotive. I’m looking for a more professional position. Which includes: Data Entry, Clerical (Medical or otherwise), Office Assistant or Medical Office. Can I please get these jobs openings sent to me instead of the others? Thank You

Any advise for the older job seeker? I was let go after 12 years with the same employer and my former HR manager suspects age discrimination; however, I don’t want to go back, I just want another company in which to invest my skills, time and loyalty. Still, while I have been received warmly and told that I interview very well and have an excellent resume, I have not been able to land a job. I would love some new perspective…. I am a great team player with a passion for providing great service and can’t believe that there are NO jobs out there that could use what I have to offer. How could I improve my ‘pitch’?
    Thanks so much!

Hi George! Following up on your application is so important. Your best bet would be to follow up directly with the employer, they will probably not see your blog comment to Snagajob. Good luck!

Hi Valerie! Following up on your applications is so important. Your best bet would be to follow up directly with the employer, they will probably not see your blog comment. Have you thought about following up in person? We talked to a major national employer who told us that following up in person is very effective. Take a look at this article: http://www.snagajob.com/resources/following-up-in-person/ and let me know if you have any questions!

Hello snag a job! I am currently seeking a job. I have no experience and never had a real job although I have worked with my uncles company as a helper for a year. Do you think it will be more difficult to find a job with no experience?

I really feel that I’ll make a great candidate to employers and should be hired. I complete all assigned tasks that I am asked to do, superior memory span, efficient organization skills, hard worker, fond with using tools, and punctual. Apparently, employers don’t think that’s good enough. Do I really have to meet all the requirements on the job description? Isn’t it enough to have met all but one? Also, I never even held a job interview before, even there doesn’t mean that I’ll get a job. I always get stuck at submitting the application and no response from anyone. Is it because my application doesn’t meet their interview requirements? I really like to know what the employers are thinking because they could be hiding something from us job seekers. Any advice?

What I would like to know is why employers don’t give you a small space to make any additional comments in? May be 50 words? I was not considered for a job I am sure because I live 11 miles outside of town. They pay gas mileage, I was willing to start counting my mileage at the 11 mile mark. I worked for 2 Major Fortune 500 companies and met the qualifications, except location. When I submitted my Resume it was automatically rejected without consideration. I just feel this is unfair. I am seeking a Part-Time Merchandisers Position, I have 6 years experience, I am just wondering if I should add this information in my cover letter when applying? As I said there is no comment space, I can’t go back to the application to add this, it tells me I’ve already applied. Any suggestions? This is also a major Company, I love the independence of merchandising and would enjoy this job. Thanks for your help and your time. Rachael
