Founded in 1957 by Angus G. Wynne, the original Six Flags theme park was created in Arlington, Texas. The park got its name from the flags of the six different nations that have governed Texas.
In 1966, a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad purchased the park in an effort to diversify its assets. With this new spending power, the company added new park additions and continued to grow by acquiring independent parks throughout the U.S.
