Steak ‘n Shake is a casual restaurant chain that offers a variety of burgers and hand-dipped shakes, along with other meals, sides and drinks. Its name and slogan, “Famous for Steakburgers,” comes from its popular Steakburgers that were originally made from a combination of T-bone, sirloin and round steaks.
The restaurant has over 600 locations that offer a variety of dining options, including drive-thru, sit-down and front-window service. Many of its locations are also open 24/7, offering additional convenience to its customers. A lot of the restaurants are located in the Midwestern United States, but they also have some in the South and Mid-Atlantic, along with Europe and the Middle East. The company is currently owned by Biglari Holdings.

Gus Belt founded Steak ‘n Shake in Illinois in 1934. One of the restaurant’s original slogans was: “In Sight It Must Be Right.” This slogan referred to the fact that the meat used in the restaurant’s Steakburgers was wheeled out to the dining area where it was ground to make the burgers, further reassuring customers that Steak ‘n Shake’s meat was real and high-quality. The restaurant expanded throughout Illinois up until Belt’s death in 1954.
From 1954 to the early 2000s, the company passed through many owners, including Edith Belt, Longchamps, Inc., Franklin Corporation, and E.W. Kelley and Associates. In 2008, Sardar Biglari took control of the company and transformed them from 14 quarters of loss (losing $100,000 a day) to 24 quarters of profit (earning $100,000 a day).
The company began franchising in 2018 for an investment of $10,000. Franchisees get to keep 50 percent of the profits and are promised at least $100,000 in their first year.
