Third ‘Counter Intelligence’ report shows younger job seekers are reactivating at higher rates
Job seekers are coming back to the hunt, demonstrating a belief that their odds of landing an hourly job are improving, according to Snagajob, America’s largest hourly employment marketplace for job seekers and employers.
Snagajob today released its third “Counter Intelligence: The Snagajob Service Industry Hiring Report,” a look back at hourly job seeker activity based on data captured from its website from July 2012 through June 2013.
Snagajob’s “Reactivation Index” shows a 3.8 percentage point increase in the number of job seekers who have reactivated their job search after at least 90 days of inactivity compared to the prior year. The index trended upwards in comparison to last quarter’s report – which showed a 3.1 percentage point increase – demonstrating a stronger return to the hourly job search in the second quarter.
And by age category, younger job seekers have been even more likely to get back in the hunt compared to the broader working population. The same “Reactivation Index” shows a 5.4 percentage point increase among users 24 and younger but a 3.4 point and 2.1 point decrease in seekers ages 25-44 and 45 and older, respectively, for the period ending in June 2013.
“Government job data has consistently shown that industries dominated by hourly employees continue to add jobs,” said Jason Hamilton, vice president of marketing for Snagajob. “Growth in these industries is sparking job seeker optimism, prompting Snagajob users to hit the virtual pavement to resume their job search.”
Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed that that the retail industry added 47,000 jobs and the restaurant industry added 38,000 jobs in July. In the past year, retail and restaurants – two primary industries represented on Snagajob’s site – have added a combined 733,000 jobs.
In another indication that younger job seekers are becoming increasingly invested in their job search, Snagajob has seen a 17.5 percent increase in the number of job seekers under the age of 24 on Snagajob.com over the past year.
“The year-over-year increase we’ve seen in younger job seekers is one of the driving factors behind the exponential increase in mobile visits to our site,” Hamilton said. “Millennials are the largest mobile users in our marketplace so it’s not surprising that we’ve seen a 114 percent increase in mobile visits to our site compared to last year.”
