A Google business page can improve search rankings and increase site traffic

Whether you run a restaurant, hotel or boutique, being competitive in today’s market means ranking highly in Google’s search results.

Google is constantly updating its search algorithms and local searches—including applicants searching for hourly jobs—have become more important than ever. Searches such as “restaurants near me” and “jobs near me” have been picking up in popularity. Even if users don’t type “near me” in the search bar, results will show up based on the user’s location first.

Google wants to serve up the best results for everything from Maps integration to customer reviews. So the best way to increase your company’s visibility in these search results is creating a Google business profile. This isn’t a guaranteed ticket to first page results, but the closer you are to where the search is occurring, the better your chance of showing up in their results.

How to set up a Google Business page

Make sure you have a Google account. If you don’t already have a personal Google account or a Google account you use for your business, you’ll need to set one up. Once you’re logged in, go to the Google Business page and click “Get Started.”


Fill in your company’s information. Google might prompt you to search for your company before filling in the information. Don’t worry if the site doesn’t recognize the address, just be sure the address is correct. You can also add additional information for any other locations you might have.


Review all online information about your business. This starts with your own website and anywhere else your business might be featured online. Differences in names, streets, spellings and more can harm the rankings for your Google Business profile.


Verify your account with Google. A postcard will be sent to your business’s address but depending on the type of business you own, you might be able to complete verification via phone or email. The postcard should arrive in 1-2 weeks, and you only have 30 days from when you submitted your information to complete verification. Miss that window and the postcard will need to be resent, starting the process all over again.


Complete verification by entering your PIN. When you receive your verification postcard, email or phone call from Google, visit the Verify My Business page or the My Google Business app to enter the PIN number provided.


Congratulations! With that last step, you have successfully set up your Google business page. Your small business is on the way to grabbing more attention online.


Optimize Your Page to Improve Your Google Ranking

Now that your Google business page is live, you’ll have to optimize it for better rankings. Add all the relevant information about your business, including phone number, business hours, description and business category. But there is even more you can include to improve your chances of ranking higher.


  • Get high-tech and include virtual tours of your business. A “Google Trusted Photographer” in your area can help you submit the tour for your listing.
  • Make sure each service described in your Google business listing has its own dedicated page on your website.
  • Include high-quality images in your Google business page. Any uploaded images should have file names that include keywords that apply to your business—like “healthy vegan restaurant” or “women’s running shoe store” for example.
  • Encourage friends, family and customers to write review, which helps increase the likelihood of a higher Google ranking. Try your best to respond to all reviews and comments (this helps with rankings too).
