WHAT DO SPECIALISTS DO?
We think you're special, but do you have what it takes to be a specialist? Specialist is the broad term for people who are an expert on a specific aspect of a job, rather than working more generally in the field. Specialists are able to buckle down and home in on the distinctive duties of their job. Example jobs include Sales Specialists, In-Store Demo Event Specialists, HR Specialists, and Computer Support Specialists in a company's IT department.
HOW MUCH DO SPECIALISTS MAKE?
This can vary from field to field, and depends on training. In 2010, the median income for a skincare specialist was $28,920 a year, or $13.90 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Correctional treatment specialists earned $47,200 per year, or $22.69 an hour, and computer support specialists earned $46,260 a year, or $22.24 an hour.
WHAT ARE THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS?
Again, each field is different, companies have different requirements, and experience always counts. Sales specialists might need only a high school diploma, but knowledge of the product they are selling, such as auto parts or clothing, will help greatly. Computer support specialists will need an in-depth knowledge of computers and systems, as well as at least an associates degree. Skincare specialists need to complete a state-certified cosmetology program. As a specialists, you will also benefit from ongoing training to keep up with changes in products and advancements in your field.
JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Communication Skills: Specialists are the experts in their field, but it does no good if you can't communicate to your customers, co-workers and managers. Being able to speak clearly, write and communicate effectively will help you greatly.
- Listening Skills: As the authority, people will bring you their problems, issues and needs to solve. Great listening skills will help you to quickly resolve issues as they arise, and get to root problems with customers and co-workers.
- Problem-Solving Skills: You will need to assess issues as they arise and devise the best actions for moving forward. Being able to think critically and solve problems will be an asset to your work.
- Ability to Keep Calm: Specialists are often called in during moments of crisis. Being able to keep a cool head in tough situations with customers will help you greatly in your job.
