About this job

Internal Housekeeping Supervisors are the first rank of interface between the workers and account supervisors or area managers.  The Internal Housekeeping Supervisor manages relationships through constant monitoring of the job site. They are actively involved in the daily routine of workers and inspect completed tasks to ensure that workers are meeting all performance standards and customer service expectations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Is familiar with job requirements and service expectations

  • Inspects work of team members
  • Has a keen eye for detail
  • Resolves any issues or requests in a timely manner
  • Communicates well with others
  • May train new employees
  • Builds and develops relationships with hotel management
  • In absence of a account supervisor or area manager may have to conduct walk through with hotel management
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Follows and ensures all required safety and standard operating procedures
  • Adheres to all company and regulatory policies, procedures and standards of conduct

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Internal Housekeeping Supervisors work indoors and outdoors. The work can be physically demanding and some tasks can be dirty and unpleasant.   They may spend most of their day on their feet, sometimes lifting or pushing heavy objects.  There is normally a pervasive sense of urgency.  Although injuries and illnesses are seldom serious hazards may include slips, falls, cuts, bruises and minor burns, and muscle strain due to rushing and inappropriate lifting and bending.

Training

This is a more experienced worker that has learned the general operations and needs of the job and knows how to use and maintain machines, understands the use of cleaners and chemicals, culinary utensils and dining etiquette, and has good interpersonal and communication skills.  

Advancement

Advancement opportunities are often limited to those who remain on the job for a long period of time. After gaining experience, some supervisors advance to a variety of opportunities that include supervisory positions.

Types of Supervisor Positions

Internal Housekeeping Supervisors are leaders that work in the following areas: Kitchen and Dining Services; General Cleaning (Housekeeping and Janitorial); Food and Beverage (Culinary and Dining Services); Hotel and Convention Services

Skills and Specialized Knowledge

Interpersonal skills.  Internal Housekeeping Supervisors must get along well with their team, the people who work in the buildings they clean, and their management.

Mechanical skills.  Internal Housekeeping Supervisors should understand general operations. They should be able to make routine decision regarding repairs or adjustments to equipment, such as changing light bulbs and replace worn parts.

Physical strength. Internal Housekeeping Supervisors should be able to lift and move cleaning materials and heavy equipment.  Cases of liquid cleaner and equipment are often very heavy, so workers should be able to lift without injuring their back.

Stamina. Internal Housekeeping Supervisors should be able to spend most of their time on their feet—lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching and moving without tiring.

Listening skills. Internal Housekeeping Supervisors must listen patiently to the points being made, wait to speak until others have finished, and ask appropriate questions when necessary.

Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must meet company and hotel hire requirements
  • Bilingual: Fluent in English and Spanish
  • Must have history of superior work attendance
  • Must understand the work or process being supervised
  • Must have a solid grasp of the task.
  • Internal Housekeeping Supervisors Need to Know the Basics of the Position: operating hours, job duties of each position, and physical demands.
  • Many sites require the Internal Housekeeping Supervisor to train or oversee the training of new workers
  • Must be able to multitask and work in a fast paced environment
  • A keen eye for detail
  • Able to perform inspections and train employees
  • Able to stand and walk over extensive time periods
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to do simple arithmetic and follow written instructions
  • Need to be objective when dealing with employee relations matters
  • Can lift at least 35 lbs. with no trouble
  • Must meet company and hotel grooming standards
  • Must wear slip resistant shoes to avoid slips and falls
  • Must abide by the company’s policies, procedures and standards of conduct
  • Must have reliable transportation 

Education and Experience

High school education

1-2 Years experience to be hired into a supervisor position

Experience working in the hotel industry a plus

Work Schedule

Must be able to work a flexible schedule; days, nights, weekends and holidays

Report to work on schedule dates and time and maintain a responsible attendance record
