About this job

We are currently seeking Repairman/Welders for our Sioux City, IA plant. The Repairman/Welder is responsible for using hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components of the railcars or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products used for railcars. 

Essential Functions
- Operate safety equipment and uses safe work habits while performing job functions.Predictable regular attendance is required.
- Perform welding functions, welding components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions ensuring welds are applied according to specifications.
- Perform repairs and parts replacement on railcars as required by AAR and FRA rules.
- Gather material, sets up welding equipment, layout, measure, cut or burn, fit into position, align, and secure parts and assembles as required prior to final assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers, etc.
- Replace welding wire or rod as required.Moves material to next work station or to storage. Cleans up the work area as required.
- Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding or cutting equipment to fuse and/or separate metal segments, using processes such as gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW , shielded metal arc welding (SMAW),Oxy-fuel cutting (OFC) air carbon arc cutting (AAC) and plasma arc cutting (PAC).
- Monitor fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts of warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of materials.Rework if required may include back-gouging.
- Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand, power and welding tools common to the welding trade; such as stick electrode, automatic welder, carbon arc, burning equipment, cutting torch, hammers, wrenches, pry bars, jacks, material handling equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic tools, respirators when required, etc.Frequently checking and adjusting equipment to prevent injuries or damage to personnel, products or equipment.
- Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials

Physical Requirements
- Basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills required.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials.
- Association of American Railroad (AAR) Certification may be required.
- May work in confined spaces and at heights exceeding 4 ft. off the ground with proper PPE.
- Close mental and visual attention required, coordinating manual dexterity with mental and visual attention for sustained periods of time.
