POSITION SUMMARY

Assists the Director of Nursing Services in directing the activities of licensed and non-licensed personnel who provide health care and nursing services to residents of Appalachian Christian Village on a 24-hour, 7 day per week basis.

POSITION ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND STANDARDS

  • The Assistant Director of Nursing Services reports to the Director of Nursing Services. Reporting to this position are Shift Supervisors, Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nurse Assistants, Non-Certified Nurse Assistants, Unit Clerk, and Medical Records Clerk.
  • The Assistant Director of Nursing Services compliments the Director of Nursing Services in planning, developing and supervising the activities of licensed and non-licensed personnel who provide health care and nursing services to Nursing Home residents. This position assists with the development and implementation of nursing services, objectives, policies and procedures in accordance with Federal and State regulations.
  • The incumbent shares, with the Director of Nursing Services, the responsibility for selecting Nursing Department staff, completing employee appraisals and resolving problems involving employee disciplinary action.
  • The Assistant Director of Nursing Services shares responsibility for backing up RN staff on a 24-hour per day, 7 day per week basis.
  • The Assistant Director of Nursing Services may confer with residents' physicians on an occasional basis to clarify medical orders and direct care.
  • In the absence of the Director of Nursing Services, the Assistant Director of Nursing Services performs the duties of the Director.
  • Oversees the clinical operations (i.e. monitoring resident conditions, psychopharmacological drugs, restraint use, foley catheters, pressure ulcers, etc.) of the Nursing Department.
  • Assists the Director of Nursing Services in the design, implementation and evaluation of nursing systems that ensure consistent delivery of care and maintains and promotes resident rights.
  • Conducts nursing rounds on all units several times a day, including the beginning and end of shift.
  • Provides reports/recommendations as needed/required for the Director of Nursing Services concerning the operations of Nursing Services.
  • Assists the Director of Nursing Services in the development, implementation and evaluation of facility policies, procedures and guidelines on an annual and on-going basis (i.e. nursing, pharmacy, lab, physicians, medical records, etc.)
  • In the absence of the Director of Nursing Services, conducts staff meetings.
  • Assists the Director of Nursing Services in ensuring that residents are free from abuse, mistreatment and neglect.
  • Assists the Director of Nursing Services in ensuring nursing staff awareness and compliance with Federal and State regulations relative to resident rights issues.
  • Assists in nursing administrative calls.

  • Assist patients, family members or other clients with concern and empathy; respect their confidentiality and privacy and communicate with them in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Answer and refer telephone calls or other inquires to ensure accurate and timely communications are facilitated.
  • Identify yourself in a pleasant and positive manner.
  • Take responsibility for helping the caller.

  • Assist in the orientation/training of new Team Members.

  • Demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns.
  • Investigate and follow through on unusual orders or requests for service or information.
  • Follow proper reporting procedures for actual or potential accidents and/or incidents so follow-up and/or prevention can occur.
  • Record/report the need for service maintenance or repair of equipment and remove any faulty equipment from service.
  • Contribute to the achievement of Performance Improvement and participate in PI activities utilizing the problem-solving methodology of F.A.D.E. for performance improvement.
  • Consistently evaluate work and determine if further steps are needed to meet client expectations.
  • Take initiative to do or redo inadequate or incomplete work, even if it is not yours.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Attend required annual in-service programs.
  • Participate in continuing education activities and obtain required contact hours.
  • ADHERENCE TO DEPARTMENT AND DEPARTMENTAL POLICIES
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all policies and procedures and ability to reference them from appropriate books and manuals.
  • Comply with the Department's infection control policies and procedures including Body Substance Isolation (BSI) and the Exposure Control Plan which reflects OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to ensure a safe working environment for self and others.
  • Ensure that the Department is operated in an efficient and cost effective manner by adhering to Department and departmental attendance policies as documented on the Employee Attendance Record.

EDUCATION:

1. Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.

2. Valid registration as a Registered Nurse in the State of Tennessee.

3. Current AHA Healthcare Provider training (BCLS)

EXPERIENCE:

1. Previous experience in patient care setting preferred.

2. Knowledgeable regarding the nursing process and its application, including the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Incumbent will need to be able to lift up to 75 lbs.

2. Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting and supporting patients.

3. Incumbent will be exposed to virus, disease and infection from patients and specimens in working environment.

4. Incumbent will be required to work at any facility and be responsible for own transportation.

5. Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need. (rotate shifts, standby, on-call)

6. Incumbent may be required to work extended periods of time at a video display terminal (VDT).

7. Incumbent may experience traumatic situations including psychiatric, dismembered and deceased patients.
