Currently, we are hiring for an experienced Safety Manager. The Safety Manager at Universal Services of America reports to the Director of Health & Safety and is a fast paced, goal oriented position with significant responsibilities. Our ultimate goal is to reduce risk potential before an accident occurs to ensure our most important asset; our people, continue to supply a high-level of service in the safest environment possible.

The Safety Manager is responsible for delivering risk control services to a variety of clients in an assigned territory and will be able to work semi-autonomously. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Implements and helps develop corporate safety programs including IIPP, Hazard Communication, Emergency Action Plans, Workplace Violence, Active Shooter, and others.
  • Completes field and branch training on technically specific items as directed by our safety programs and Corporate Safety & Health Management.
  • Evaluate newly acquired operations and assist with integration into the USA safety culture. This will include training and site evaluations.
  • Assists in OSHA responses for citations, completes and recommendations. This includes on-site and telephonic surveys for data gathering purposes. Also responsible for maintaining all entries for OSHA logs.
  • Assists with corporate safety communication through distributed information including newsletters or bulletins.
  • Conduct loss control surveys at client locations to determine potential hazards and risk factors to be considered prior to USA employees being assigned to a site.
  • Conduct accident investigations quickly to determine root cause and immediate corrective measures. Long term program improvements must also be identified.
  • Ability to provide field training on technically specific safety practices is essential. This may often occur with short notice.
  • Write technically detailed reports that provide a clear assessment of risk and clearly articulate recommendations for risk improvement.
  • Serve as a safety resource to regional sales executives both before and after a client is signed. This includes appropriate PPE, training requirements, documentation of behaviors by employees, etc.
  • Consult with clients on ways to control hazards in order to reduce or prevent losses for our employees.
  • Manage and assist with client's safety databases and provide and/or create safety programs upon requests.
  • Consistently influence clients to implement recommendations from USA Safety Directors and carrier Loss Control Consultants.
  • Conduct research for USA Corporate Safety Directors on clients with respect to class of business, operations, unique or unidentified exposures, or any other technical subject requiring similar analysis.
  • Analyze loss trends, recognize opportunities to provide risk control products and/or services which can help reduce losses. Explain how their recommendations or products can help minimize losses.
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory environment and emerging safety issues including Cal/OSHA and Fed/OSHA regulations, Fire Regulations, Fleet Safety Best Practices and others.
  • Must be able to explain to clients how the issues impact them and what they can do.
  • Apply analytical and ergonomic skills to complete proactive safety efforts in these areas.
  • Creates company wide corporate safety communication using a variety of distribution methods such as newsletters, bulletins and/or email campaigns.
  • Maintain timely, relevant communications with the Corporate Safety Team and Corporate Human Resources.
Position Requirements

Qualified applicants for the Safety Manager position will meet the minimum requirements as listed below:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with a minimum of 10 years of field safety experience with a progressive increase in responsibilities. CSP, ARM or equivalent certification and bi-lingual English/Spanish communication desired.
  • Experience working with all aspects of safety in a variety of industries is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of California safety regulations (Cal/OSHA enforced regulations, Fire & Life Safety, Electrical Safety, Emergency Response best practices, Chemical Safety, etc.) required.
  • Strong understanding of Workers Comp Insurance and Auto/Fleet Insurance. Experience with Property & Casualty lines of insurance is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, successfully handle and prioritize multiple competing assignments and effectively manage deadlines. Must be highly organized.
  • Must be highly proficient and fully functional in all Microsoft Office applications and able to effectively utilize all available office management technology including Outlook, Excel, Word and internet applications. Knowledge of ISNetworld is a plus.
  • Professional, articulate and able to use good independent judgment and discretion. Must have proven ability to maintain correspondence, discussions and materials in strictest confidence. Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills and ability to influence others and foster collaborative relationships. Ability to make complex technical information and recommendations understandable and clear to audiences with varied levels of technical knowledge.
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills a must. All communication must be legible, comprehensible, and properly reviewed/edited for accuracy.
  • Must be able to travel up to 75% of the time on a short notice via air and/or automobile transportation.
