General Statement of Duties :

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, preparation and sterilization of supplies, instruments and equipment. Effectively maintains the National Standards and Recommended Practices for Sterilization, supplies, and equipment and promotes collaboration with physicians, nursing staff, department heads, and personnel of other departments. Adheres to national, state and hospital department policies.

Essential Job Functions :

1. Cleans department and sets up workstations according to department standards (in accordance with AORN and AAMI).

2. Demonstrates competence in selecting the appropriate chemical solutions for sterile processing washers and operation of washers.

3. Receives contaminated reusable surgical instruments and equipment in decontamination and demonstrates competence in selecting the appropriate cleaning or disinfection method.

4. Identifies tray type by contents of instrument tray. Identifies instruments that do not function properly and replaces or reports instruments that need repair or that are missing.

5. Selects appropriate packing material according to type of sterilization techniques to be used. Labels sterilized products with identification, and sterilization indicators as in accordance with AORN and AAMI recommendations.

6. Follows instructions for operation of sterilization equipment. Maintains the integrity of sterilized packages when loading sterilization carts and after initial cool down period.

Minimum Education and Experience :

High school graduate or equivalent. One year in Central Sterile Service or Sterile Processing preferred.

( ) VERY HEAVY WORK: Lifting objects in excess of 100 lbs. with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing more than 50 lbs.

( ) Ability to lift, push and pull with assistance (mechanical or co-worker) the weight of an average patient specific to the department.
