Acts under the supervision of Registered Nurse in the preparation and delivery of instruments and supplies for the use during surgical procedures. Technician will assist under the supervision of a Registered Nurse with patient care and related services in the Operating Room and provides proper care and maintenance of instruments. Responsible for supporting the nursing staff with routine duties and for transporting patients to their rooms following established safety procedures. Demonstrates professional conduct and accountability in accordance with Hospital Philosophy and Mission statement.

Accountable for adhering to ORMC mission including meeting behavioral expectations (compassion, caring and confidentiality), providing excellence in health care delivery, supporting dignity of all persons (empowerment) and responsible stewardship of resources.

Participates in assigned surgical procedures under the supervision of circulating nurses.

Prepares surgical suite, instruments and supplies for each assigned case, orders surgical supplies assists at the end of case with instrument care and cleaning of Operating Room.

Assists in patient and equipment movement activities, demonstrating proper positioning and safety techniques.

Assists with surgical activities including passing instruments, taking needle and sponge counts, appropriately caring for specimens and sterilization.

Maintains equipment, supplies and instruments in proper condition and troubleshoots equipment problems.

May guide the activities of other surgical technicians and students.

Follows guidelines that maintain safety for oneself, patients, visitors and co-workers and if classified as a category I or II employee under OSHA regulations, adheres to OSHA standards by wearing personal protective equipment, following universal precautions and being knowledgeable about blood borne pathogens.

Prepares cases for the following day when current cases are done. Makes sure all supplies and equipment are available for cases that are being prepared for.

Responsible for attending in-services, mandatory staff meetings, etc. as required.

Updates preference cards as changes occur.

He/she must also accept weekend and holiday call as assigned.

Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Must hold current BLS.

Level I Surgical Technician must have familiarity with medical supplies.

Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting is preferred.

Must possess organizational skills, along with medical terminology background.

Must be able to effectively communicate with co-workers, public and physicians.

Must be able to stand for long periods of time, and move heavy patients and equipment as necessary.
