About this job

Responsible to the Director of Surgical Services or OR Manager. Under the direct supervision of the charge nurse and/or the circulating nurse in the room. At this level, the surgical technologist functions independently in all Level I and Level II procedures. Also serves as a preceptor for new staff on Level I and Level II procedures. Responsible to take first and second call as required by the department. Is responsible for appropriate instrumentation adjustment relevant to the ages and sizes of the patients served, i.e. Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.

Actively and regularly teaches new techs and traveler techs the proper policies and procedures specific to

St. Mark's Hospital Operating Room.

Assist with between case and terminal cleaning.

Assists circulating RN in calling for "time outs".

Demonstrates ability to meet surgeon's needs through anticipation and using previous experience.

Demonstrates basic scrubbing skills for Level I procedures (Gen, GYN, plastic, minor orthopedics, etc.) as

verified by specific competencies.

Demonstrates effective organizational skills to miimize turnover times.

Demonstrates the ability to correctly log-in specimens and can explain process for specimen handling.

Demonstrates understanding and application of principles of sterilization.

Participates in call rotation.

Participates in evaluation of new products and equipment, etc.

Properly cleans and cares for instrumentation.

Provides a positive learning experience for students and new employees.

Soiled case carts orgainized and sharps free.

When assigned to teach/orient will do so in a manner that will allow the individual to develop

competencies to perform job functions without a preceptor.

Current BLS certification required. Prefer Certified Scrub Technologist. Good communication skills, both orally and written. Demonstrates eye/hand coordination and anticipatory skills. Ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
