POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sitter performs basic patient care services related to patient safety through continuous observation of a patient in the patient room and under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and/or licensed vocational nurse (LVN). The Sitter provides patient care and safety according to hospital policies and procedures. The Sitter accepts assignments on other units when necessary. The Sitter assists in maintaining a clean, organized and safe patient room and environment when observing a patient.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Performs direct patient care:

Provides limited direct care as directed such as assist with feeding of patient, bed baths, assist with ambulation to bathroom, vital signs etc, according to hospital standards and

once skill competencies are met. Exception: If sitting with more than one patient in an open area, duties are strictly observation. Sitter will notify the nurse of any patient care

needs)

· Can work with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

· Communicates all findings in a correct/concise/clear written and or verbal format.

· Can recognize abnormal findings and report findings to the nurse or designee.

· Can recognize and respond appropriately in an emergency situation.

· Have knowledge of medication security; handling and/or storage of medication, access areas where medications are stored. Does not have access to stored medication,

nor handle medications or equipment with medications, such as procedural trays.

· Applies knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span to identify patient and family requirements relative to age-specific needs.

2. Technical Skills: (as required by facility/unit/dept.)

· Level of consciousness

· Vital Signs

· Skin alterations

· Assist with feeding, assist with personal hygiene including oral care and bathing, and bedmaking as needed

· Demonstrates proficiency in and maintains aseptic technique

· Assist with Incentive Spirometry as needed

· Mobility: assist with positioning for comfort, patient transfers, ambulation with or without equipment and risk to fall observation

· Restraints: Knowledge and understanding of wrist, vest and roll belts

· Knowledge and understanding of how to decrease agitation through environmental manipulation

· Emergency: initiates CPR and notify nurse or designee

· Have knowledge of limited role of medication security, handling, storage and transport of non-narcotic medications under the approval and direction of a supervisor

3. Maintains current professional knowledge and skills in accordance with established methods of

the department.

· Completes annual mandatory education

· Attends unit meetings and inservices as applicable.

4. Appropriately access secured rooms with locked medications storage containers in order to perform assigned job functions, which does not include management of

medications.

5. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Must be able to demonstrate understanding of HCA's and St. David's "Patients First" safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures. Adheres to isolation policies and procedures. Utilizes universal precautions at all times. Completes assigned orientation plan as determined by unit/dept.

Works autonomously and with supervision. Interfaces with the public, physicians, staff, patients and administration and ancillary/support department representative. Maintains confidentiality of patients medical records. Regular and predictable attendance is required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred: Previous sitter experience, pre-nursing student from an accredited college/university or completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Medical Assistant

(MA) program.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES :

Required: BLS certification

Preferred: Certified Nurses Assistant or Medical Assistant certification
