The Division of Measurement Standards (DMS) is responsible for the enforcement of California weights and measures laws and regulations. Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) Program ensures retailers are providing their customers with information about the origin of various food products. The mission of the COOL program is to ensure that all fresh or frozen fruits, vegetables, fish, shellfish, beef, veal, chicken, port, goat, lamb, and raw peanuts, pecans, and macadamia nuts are labeled in compliance with the federal labeling requirements per the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 7, Parts 60 and 65. Mandatory COOL requirements help consumers make informed purchasing decisions about the food they buy. COOL personnel inspect labels and signage at retail grocery stores, supermarkets, and club warehouse stores throughout California.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision of DMS staff, the incumbent will conduct retail inspections in the COOL Program in order to meet the terms of the cooperative agreement between United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and DMS to ensure compliance with the origin labeling provision of the 2002 and 2008 Farm Bills.

DUTIES:

Inspection Activities

Travel throughout southern part of the state to conduct retail inspections, as assigned, to inspect commodity and store labeling for the country of origin of fresh and frozen agricultural commodities. Complete and submit thorough retail inspection reports in a timely manner to the COOL manager. Follow up with retail stores, as needed, to obtain necessary documentation reflecting the chain of custody information, i.e. invoices, bills of lading, etc., to complete inspections with required timelines. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with appropriate State-Federal and retail store representatives.

Maintain Records

Maintain daily reports of work completed. Review, correct as necessary, and submit reports to Program supervisor for review.

WHO SHOULD APPLY:

Priority consideration will be given to applicants receiving state public assistance under the CalWORKs or Temporary Assistance for Needy Family (TANF) programs. Applicants who receive state public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKs or TANF recipient in the “Comments” section of the application.
