Role Description

Joint Pfizer and Colorado State University Post-Doctoral Fellowship: Investigation of the Mechanistic & Molecular Interactions of Metformin with Exercise

A post-doctoral fellowship is available to study the interplay between pharmacotherapy and aerobic exercise training in rodent models of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM is growing health issue in industrialized nations. Newly diagnosed T2DM patients are widely if not universally counseled to undertake regular exercise as part of the therapeutic regime to control their disease. Metformin, which is considered frontline therapy, is frequently prescribed along with exercise. A growing body of data, however, demonstrates that metformin may counteract some of the benefits of exercise. Metformin has been shown to reduce aerobic capacity in insulin resistant human subjects and may also suppress exercise-induced improvements in this endpoint. Further, subjects treated with metformin in combination with exercise training show no greater and in some cases worse glycemic improvements than those treated with either modality alone. The objective of this fellowship will be to assess of the effect of metformin in combination with exercise training on metabolism and mitochondrial respiration in rodent disease models in vivo and ex vivo.

The post-doctoral fellow will study jointly in laboratories in the Cardiovascular, Metabolic and Endocrine Research Unit at Pfizer (Cambridge, MA) and in the Human Performance Clinical/Research Laboratory that is housed in the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University (Fort Collins, CO) and will be jointly mentored by investigators from both institutions. This unique position will afford the fellow the opportunity to experience research within both an academic and pharmaceutical setting, providing complementary skills that should enhance their overall repertoire.
