Job Description:

To provide proficient, age specific, direct and indirect patient care in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care for assigned patients in accordance with legal, hospital practice and departmental policies and procedures, established standards of nursing care and practice, and as defined by the state of Florida. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient's clinical condition including mental status, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, is able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement and CQI activities.

1. Carries out established techniques for safe administration of medications and parental fluids per SMH policies; correctly administers medications based on age of the patient and the patient's clinical condition.

2. Follows established guidelines for reporting a medical error/near miss, or unanticipated outcome in the patient's care which results in patient harm.

3. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.

4. Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient's response to treatment and evaluate overall plan on a daily basis for effectiveness.

5. Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate.

6. Demonstrates knowledge of critical thinking skills; breaks down a situation into smaller pieces to identify key or underlying issues; able to figure out cause and effect relationships.

7. Provides care to patients with compromised nutritional/metabolic status, and patients requiring fluid and electrolyte management.

8. Delivers designated nursing interventions to assigned patients that are consistent with the stated medical plan of care.

9. Communicates appropriately and clearly to BH Director, BH Coordinator, charge nurse, co-workers, physicians, patients, and family members.

10. Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.

11. Provides care appropriate to disease condition and age of the patient.

Regulatory Requirements:

* Current Florida state Registered Nurse Licensure.

* One or more years of Behavioral Health experience preferred.

* BLS certification.

Language Skills:

* Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

* Additional languages preferred.

Skills:

* Basic computer knowledge.
