About this job

The ICU/CCU RN is to provide high quality, comprehensive nursing care to all ages of patients experiencing critical illness or injury and to provide support to their families. The tasks and responsibilities include:

Completes patient care - Provides nursing services for assigned intensive care unit patients. Familiar with a variety of the nursing concepts, practices, and procedures specific to patients in intensive care. Performs complete physical assessments. Directs, initiates, and implements patient care. Evaluates results of interventions and communicates to pertinent information to appropriate individuals. Assists physician during examinations and procedures. Prepares equipment, applies and changes dressings, and monitors patients. Administers prescribed medications. Maintains accurate written and computerized documentation of patient care. Manages restraints according to hospital policy. Performs a variety of tasks. Effectively communicates and reports changes in patient status on a continuum. Performs daily bedside reporting at change of shift.

Patient education - Ensures patients and/or families receive appropriate health care education and instruction throughout hospitalization and in preparation for discharge.

Accurately processes physicians orders - Assures physicians ordered are correctly entered into the meditech system.

Orientation of new employee - Participates in the orientation of new staff through assessment, guidance, and mentorship.

Physical environment and equipment - Performs cleaning and disinfecting of equipment used in the intensive care unit when needed. Maintains sound knowledge of equipment use in the intensive care unit.

Charge Nurse - Ensures completion of log books, chart reviews, and that narcotics are counted per policy. Demonstrates working knowledge of cardiac monitors, procedures performed in ICU, and ability to direct the routine of the shift to ensure efficient and complete care of the patients. Demonstrates critical thinking skills by anticipating problems before they arise, and functions as a resource for co-workers. Controls overtime and adjust staffing for volume and acuity. Reports issues or concerns to manager or designated individual. Provides service recovery as needed.

Required Job Qualifications include:

Current Virginia licensure as an RN.

Current certification as a BLS Healthcare Provider

Basic Arrhythmia

ACLS

ASN from an accredited school of professional nursing.

Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.

Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.

Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds.

Preferred:

BSN ( Required enrollment in an accredited RN to BSN program within 24 months of hire date, if the registered nurse is not currently BSN prepared Will successfully obtain BSN no later than 5 years or 60 months from hire date. Enacted effective date July 1, 2012)
