Summary of Duties:

In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department's Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

The position incumbent functions as a senior Laboratory Technician, performing technical and clerical work in the Laboratory Support Section. Duties require working in the sample receiving room and performing some sample preparation and analytical testing in the laboratory.

Receive and unpack sampling kits. Verify contents of kits against field data sheets. Test samples for proper preservation. Maintain sample custody information according to the laboratory protocol. Log received samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Label and store samples in the designated locations.

Prepare and ship sample collection kits. Duties include preparation of trip blanks, preparation of and addition of appropriate preservatives to sample containers, packing and labeling containers and arrangement of kit shipment to designated field locations.

Function as one of the lead technicians in the support group. Dispose of completed samples according to accepted laboratory standard operating procedures.

Function as backup Sample Custodian in the event of staff shortage.

Perform other laboratory duties as required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position (Essential):

Knowledge of the basic concepts and principles of the physical or natural sciences.

Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and material used in laboratory testing and analysis.

Knowledge of basic arithmetic.

Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and materials.

Ability to collect, record and analyze laboratory data.

Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to laboratory testing and analysis.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to perform laboratory tests and analyses.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to train staff and coordinate their work assignments.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

Ability to maintain a valid driver's license.

Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations.

Monthly salary: $2,211.70 (Hiring at base of the position title)
