Job Summary This is a 32 bed Adult Acute Rehabilitation Unit offering highly skilled nursing care that is personalized and comprehensive to medically complex patients requiring acute rehabilitation. The population includes patients with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, neurological disease, orthopedic trauma or surgery, neurological disorders or surgery, multiple trauma, burns and post transplant. Up to 2 patients may require ventilator support. An interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers and discharge planners assess the needs of the patient and establish the treatment plan and goals. Collaborative care is coordinated by the primary nursing teams and led by a Resident and Attending Physician.

Responsibilities* Duties:

To assist the department manager in planning and management of the unit and provision of patient care. To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, service, education and research. To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements. Reports directly to the Nurse Manager. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel. Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Nurse Manager.

Responsibilities include:

Personnel Management: Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff. Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff. Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff. Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans. Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians. Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Nurse Manager.

Clinical Practice: Rotate to the off shifts as determined by staffing needs and the Nurse Manager. To provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff.

Management of Clinical Area: Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives. Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements. Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.

Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies. Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures. Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process. Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Nurse Manager. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. Collaborate with Education Nurse Coordinator to implement competency based evaluation. Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Quality Assurance and Research: Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities. Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff. Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

Required Qualifications* Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.

Required Educational Requirement:

Applicant must meet one of the following:

* Bachelors degree in Nursing

* Associates degree or Diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing

Minimum five (5) years experience as a Registered Nurse.

Two (2) years of recent acute care experience.

Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability including; charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework, or other management experience.

Unit committee membership.

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers and subordinates.

Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be able to extract data from University supported computer data bases.

Desired Qualifications* Previous supervisory experience.

Previous acute rehabilitation experience.

CRRN Certification.

Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.

Consultative and teaching skills.

BSN or Master of Science Nursing preferred

Work Schedule Hours/Week: 40 hours

Shift: All shifts and weekends will be required based on unit need.

The expected staffing component is 30% (determined by staffing needs and by the Nurse Manager)
