JOB DESCRIPTION:
As a primary contact for Safeway customers, the Produce Manager provides friendly,
courteous, and helpful service. The Produce Manager is held accountable for the
department’s results in providing superior service, increasing sales, improving gain, and
containing cost. Follows division guidelines for implementation of merchandising
program. Trains, supervises, schedules, and assigns duties to produce clerks.
Conducts yearly performance evaluations on employees within the department.
Changes signs and prices for weekly or special ads. Inventories floor stock and cooler
stock daily. Writes produce order. Checks order for completeness upon arrival.
Maintains cold chain compliances as required by the company policy. Responsible for
maintaining appropriate stock and inventory in the produce area. Builds and maintains
produce displays and rotates stock as needed. Prepares product for placement on
sales floor by trimming, washing, banding, or wrapping produce. Replenishes bag rolls
in the display aisles as needed. Takes produce from receiving area and moves to the
produce department using hand truck or pallet jack. Culls product to maintain Best In
Class (BIC) appearance. Surplus items may be placed in crisping trays for storage in
cooler. Cleans scales, tables, mirrors, department floor area, wet and dry racks.
Performs floor sweeps per division guidelines. Must empty wet racks and dry racks on a
regular basis and clean with disinfectant. The position is hourly non-exempt. The
Produce Manager reports to the Store Manager, 1st and 2nd Assistant Manager, Field
Merchandiser or Person In Charge.
JOB DUTIES:
The Produce Manager is generally responsible for completing the following job duties:
1. Provides customer service as defined by the employer within the scope of the
position and within company policy.
2. Train, schedule and supervise produce workers to ensure optimum staffing patterns
for the produce department.
3. Speak with customers to resolve problems with sales, dissatisfaction with service or
product, or other problems related to the operation of the Produce Department.
4. Practice and promote safe work habits and maintain the same for customers.
5. Perform daily inventory and order necessary product and supplies to maintain
adequate inventory.
6. Rotates product and removes out of date product daily.
7. Examine and cull product as necessary to maintain best in class quality.
8. Break down load by placing product in appropriate cooler or backstock area.
9. Trim, washes, and bands produce.
10.Cleans produce display area and back room area.
11.Responsible for maintaining adequate supply of bag rolls, twist ties for customers.
12.Perform temperature checks daily.
13.Monitor inter-office mail.
14.Oversees and ensures correctness of all compliance audit issues.

15.Make Signs and displays as needed.

customer service skills or related experience.
2. Must meet the minimum requirements to interview and pass interview for promotion.

6. Produce Manager/ Produce Head Clerk must pass food safety test(s) and all other
Safeway required tests.

11.Ability to multi task while working under stress and time constraints.
12.Ability to work varied shifts over a 24 hour operation.
13.Knowledge of shrink programs and related audits.
14. Reports to work in proper uniform per company policy.

Temperature Extremes: May enter cooler for brief periods. Constant exposure to
water. Humid at times.

MACHINES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
Hand truck, six –wheeled, cart, grocery cart, box cutter, garbage disposer, shrink wrap,
baler, trash compactor, fork lift, pens and pencils, spray bottles, rags, mops, brooms,
telephone/ intercom, knives, hand held computer, personal protective equipment, and
computer.

Lifting/Carrying:
Constantly lifts 1-10 lbs. Frequently lifts 11-40 lbs. Occasionally lifts 41-60 lbs.

Constant knee to shoulder reaching. Frequent at or above shoulder level and overhead

Constant standing while on job. On tile, cement and wet floors. Sitting allowed while on

Constant walking to perform stocking duties, loading or unloading produce carts,
moving about within the produce area.
Climb/Balance:
Occasionally may use ladder or step stool. May need to climb stairs to second floor
break room/offices/restrooms.
Trunk Functions:
Frequent neck rotation and bending of head, bending/stooping, and twisting.
Occasionally squatting, kneeling and crouching.
Upper Extremity:
Constant handling/grasping and frequent fine finger manipulation.
Vision:
Use of peripheral vision and depth perception to move around crowed store area while
pushing heavily loaded carts and moving around crowed work area. Near vision used
to read displays, price sheets, codes, and instructions. Use of color vision to assess
conditions of produce.
Hearing:
To converse with customers, provide service, answer questions and conduct business.
To receive instruction from other employees and supervisors, to receive information via
telephone, intercom or IDL.
Speech:
To converse with customers, answer questions and conduct business. To page other
employees over intercom, give instructions, and provide Superior Customer Service.
