Position Title:Phlebotomist II

POSITION SUMMARY:

Collects blood from patients of all ages as required by physician orders including difficult patients Accessions lab orders as appropriate. Processes blood to prepare for testing in all laboratory areas. Responds to phone inquiries in a timely manner and is a resource to others. Able to perform job duties and direct others in more than one location (multiple offsite locations, hospital and offsite locations, or specimen processing).

SPECIFIC ELEMENTS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Able to meet Phlebotomist I requirements and successfully complete 180 days employment/training at Portsmouth Regional Hospital

Know policies, procedures and practices necessary to perform a variety of routine blood drawing procedures using standard techniques and equipment Able to answer questions regarding specimen requirements and Laboratory Able to research special tests and problems

Know policies, procedures and practices necessary to perform specimen processing duties (centrifugation, batching from offsite locations, aliquoting and special shipping as appropriate and maintaining specimen integrity through compliance with transport/storage requirements)

Responds to requests for emergency service in a timely manner, able to manage multiple conflicting priorities and direct others as needed

Organizes workload within the department to meet the needs of the institution Able to work independently and direct others or enlist help as needed

Answers all incoming phone calls and requests for information in a timely manner Acts as a resource to others

Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on patient care, the work unit, the department, and facility operations Performs as a role model for others, coaches others, and contributes to a positive work environment through inclusion and team building

Makes decisions and establishes priorities for specimen collection and processing based on established policies and procedures. Works in an independent manner Can function without supervision

Maintains clean workstation Manages inventory efficiently being aware of levels and outdates of materials, rotates stock, eliminates waste

Demonstrates initial and annual competency in phlebotomy and processing, including all computer related functions Able to train others in most functions of the job and develop advanced skills in others

Performs and documents various quality control and equipment maintenance procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations Knows the regulations and can explain the requirements to others Able to troubleshoot identified issues

Shares daily workload in the phlebotomy/processing section. Makes a contribution and offers suggestions for process improvement to meet section and department objectives. Is able to perform special projects for process improvement and help implement change

Capable of handling multiple priorities in a high volume setting within the assigned shift and according to required TAT Able to work independently and as part of a team to meet these goals, directing others if needed

Adheres to hospital policy for reporting patient safety issues, including errors. Consistently "Puts Patient Safety First" when performing job duties or providing care Able to document occurrences and participates in improvements to patient care

Meets Healthstream requirements and exceeds continuing education requirements Shares information with group and encourages professional growth within the department

EXPERIENCE:

Mininum of one-three years of experience.

EDUCATION:

High school or GED

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

1 BLS

Prefer national certification
