MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of experience in laboratory work.

College education from an accredited college or university or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience provided such education includes three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences.

This position performs work using Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

JOB DUTIES:

Performs sample preparation, extraction, partitioning and cleanup of fresh produce samples submitted to this Unit for pesticide residue analysis. Performs sample custody functions. Prepares samples for routine and non-routine analysis of pesticide residues. Extracts and partitions samples into appropriate solvents following established procedures. Prepares laboratory reagents and solutions and records all reagent information in appropriate logbooks. Documents observed inadvertent deviations from procedures in appropriate procedural logbooks. Maintains equipment used (balances, hoods, solvent evaporators, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, etc.) and records equipment information in appropriate logbooks.

Receives and examines samples submitted to the Tallahassee Chemical Residue Laboratory for pesticide and other chemical residue analysis to determine program assignments and storage requirements. Maintains sample custody of submitted samples (i.e. assigns sample numbers and batch numbers, checks samples in and out of storage, retains samples for appropriate time periods, maintains accurate records of sample locations utilizing the laboratory's sample tracking system, physically discards samples when retention periods are complete, etc.). Accurately records and verifies sample information data in a wide variety of appropriate physical and electronic logbooks and databases. Creates sample coversheets and daily schedules from the database. Makes corrections to those logbooks and databases as needed. Follows appropriate written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in conducting all such work. Implements all Unit Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) procedures and maintains all necessary documentation to insure proper custody of samples and sample aliquots. Spikes samples with appropriate QC spiking standards using volumetric pipettes. All spiking is performed by two-person teams (i.e. performs as spiker or checker).

Discards hazardous waste materials. Collects and secures hazardous waste in appropriate containers. Labels hazardous waste containers according to SOPs. Keeps logbooks up to date on hazardous materials. Transports hazardous waste materials to satellite storage site. Maintains orderly laboratory chemical and supply storage in area of responsibility. Rotates incoming chemicals and supplies in order to utilize oldest stocks first.

Cleans glassware, equipment, and laboratory in general, conforming to rigorous cleanliness standards. Performs necessary glassware check tests. Keeps all work areas clean and orderly to prevent accidents or loss of data and samples. Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies. Performs other related duties as assigned.
