About this job
Supervision of patients while on and off the unit, to include school, groups, activities, etc. Able to use a calm but assertive voice. Never belittles the patients or make fun of them in any manner.
Monitors for patient safety and reports pertinent information to Registered Nurse, Milieu Coordinator or charge nurse.
Manages the milieu by knowing and following the program, keeping the patients on schedule, running the milieu groups, and maintaining the integrity of the program.
Demonstrates knowledge and competency in age-specific criteria of the unit to which assignment is made:
Assists with activities of daily living as indicated for the specific unit including safety issues related to immobility, safety, restraints, and decreased sensorium. Is able to assess the patient's level of orientation and identify cues for assessment based on functioning level. Understands the specific unit programming and functioning level interventions to meet the needs of the more chronic patient.
Acute Care Unit (short term stays for ages 5 through 17)
Understands the difference between age appropriate behaviors versus pathological behaviors in the patient population. Understands the uniqueness of the program tract and the focus on development status.
Progressive Care Unit - Child and Adolescent (long term care for ages 10 through 17)
Assists with activities of daily living as developmentally indicated for the specific unit including safety issues related to immobility, safety, emergency interventions, and decreased sensorium. Is able to assess the patient's level of orientation and identify cues for assessment based on developmental theory. Understands the specific unit programming and developmentally sound interventions to meet the needs of the more chronic patient.
Maintains a safe therapeutic milieu by constant monitoring of patients and unit for dangerous situations and contraband.
Monitors patients, precautions in accordance with hospital policies.
Leads milieu groups, helps patients set daily goals, completes goal sheet scoring on an hourly basics. Aware of number of patients he/she should have under their care at all times, and where those patients are.
Helps patients identify their strengths and offers positive reinforcement as they practice using them. Able to set and enforce limits without being overbearing or threatening.
Monitors visitation, AA groups and answers patient and family questions about patient care.
Under supervision of a Registered Nurse or milieu coordinator, performs program related functions to ensure the program operates consistently as designed.
Participates in and documents special treatment procedures, progressive interventions and de-escalation of patients directly to the Registered Nurse.
Assists same sex staff in change of clothing searches, and room searches with the patient present.
Maintains mandatory hospital and department inservice requirements.
Understands and maintains "Line of Sight" protocol for all patients. Completes precautions check sheets as assigned and knows how to transfer patients to the care of other staff.
Delivers personal items (sharps) to patient rooms as requested.
Assists in special treatment procedures.
Checks washer/dryers each shift and completes any washing that needs to be finished. Folds and puts away uniforms and puts clean patient clothing just inside patient room.
Files information in patient record as delegated.
Knows the correct procedure for answering the phone, always maintains confidentiality of patient as well as staff information.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
