Phlebotomist/Field Rep

GENERAL SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Lab Supervisor provides all support services in the off-site laboratory draw station. Responsible for staffing, training, and resolving technical problems at the off-site draw station. Provides care to patients of all ages. This is a Phlebotomist position.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Technical: Obtains specimens. Selects venipuncture equipment appropriate for test order; draws blood specimens using knowledge of basic anatomy. Monitors patient for negative reactions, and takes appropriate measures to allay patient anxiety. Produces labels to accompany specimens to the lab. Prepares specimens for processing. Affixes correct label and packs samples for transport to lab.

2. Communication/Computer: Greets and admits patients. Processes patient information into computer system, verifying patient information. Obtains pertinent medical history from patient and/or patient record. Must be aware of all appropriate coding for tests and billing. Forwards test samples via courier to appropriate laboratories. Responds to inquiries from physicians' offices, verifies or confirms patients' orders as needed.

3. QC/QI: Prepares routine reports showing weekly statistics of test volume and patient waiting times. Maintains appropriate logs and records. Participates in training of new employees. Assures that written physician orders accompany requested tests and obtains those that are missing or ordered by phone; renews physician standing order requests.

4. Documentation: Prepares routine reports showing weekly statistics of tests requested by physicians and monthly statistics by test. Documents any patient or physician concerns for QI trending.

5. Special Duties: Maintains an inventory of supplies consistent with usage. Delivers STAT samples to the laboratory. Covers as a phlebotomist in other areas as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:

1. Specialized training in phlebotomy required. Associates Degree in related field preferred. Maintains current knowledge of developments and advances in phlebotomy services. Certification required.

2. Two years hospital phlebotomy experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Offices and patient care environments. Exposure to blood and body fluids.
