The Underwriter will develop comparative benefit packages, review claim experience, and apply underwriting guidelines to prepare renewal and/or prospect rates. This individual will support Marketing in completing group experience retention illustrations and address questions on request for proposals. The underwriter will analyze health benefit plan characteristics and assess risks around loss of clients. They will also utilize underwriting criteria and policies to provide proper rating methodologies. This individual will provide technical subject matter expertise to the sales staff and district offices on new health care proposals.

Primary Responsibilities:


Works to underwrite cases where general and some complex underwriting principles will be applied and a strong command of the rating tools is required.  Frequency of case review will be based on team lead's decision and in accordance to case level review policies.
Executes financial management on a book of business.
Assists and participates in creating and negotiating financial arrangements and settlements through Sales.
General communications will be mostly with internal business development, sales and finance. There may be limited interaction with brokers.
Underwrites a number of new firms or new coverage and major benefit revisions.
Collaborates with other areas on understanding and resolving issues that have financial implications.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable health plans and related products.
Explain underwriting principles and pricing/underwriting recommendations to sales and brokers and be able to present position based on your knowledge of underwriting, competition, product, understanding of the client needs, etc.
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with Underwriters, Account Management team members and multi-site coordinators.
Identifies needs and makes recommendations for new/improved underwriting processes and procedures. 
Support and/or lead underwriting projects as assigned.
The incumbent is responsible to achieve profit, growth, service and expense objectives through basic financial analysis and management of a book of business.
Underwrites business using basic knowledge of risk assessment and pricing for medical products and stop loss.  Can develop required premium and fees and analyze results for reasonability.  Makes appropriate decision on how to proceed.  Makes recommendations for changes based on financial analysis, underwriting principles and business strategy.
Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
Typical office setting environment in Wausau, WI, Minnetonka, MN or Hartford, CT

Requirements


Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED
Experience in Healthcare pricing, stop loss underwriting or an area that requires financial skills.
1+ year of Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint) experience.
