Community Health Systems Professional Services Corporation seeks a Outpatient Coder for its Franklin, TN, headquarters' Health Informatics and Information Management team.

The Outpatient Coder provides emergency department and ancillary outpatient coding support to HIIM Department at the facility level, reviews patient records and assigns accurate codes for each diagnosis and procedure, applies knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, and pharmacology, and demonstrates tested data quality and integrity skills.

This individual will be required to make independent decisions regarding accurate ICD-9-CM and CPT / HCPCS codes assignments. These decisions will play a key role in determining the reimbursement potential of CHS and adherence to coding compliance regulations and corporate policies developed to ensure accurate billing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Performs centralized coding for CHS hospitals via scanned medical records and abstracts via access to hospital abstracting systems.

Codes all emergency department and ancillary care patient records using ICD-9-CM and CPT (3M coding software), as well as appropriate coding references.

Maintains productivity levels set forth by Community Health Systems while maintaining a 97% accuracy rate.

Consults Director of Corporate Coding Services (CCS) and works out difficult codes and/or coding problems.

Attends coding workshops as necessary.

Keeps abreast of regulatory changes and communicates these changes to Director, CCS.

Mandatory overtime which can include:

10 hour days up to 5 days a week

8 hours for weekends

Working of certain holidays.

Certificates and Licenses:

American Health Information Management Association (AHIIMA) credential -- CCA, CCS, CPC, RHIA, or RHIT

If credential is absent, must be eligible to sit for CCA, CCS,CPC, CCS, RHIA, or RHIT exam.

Must have valid driver's license.

Education/Experience:

A minimum of a high school diploma is required.

Knowledge of the related prospective payment systems (PPS)

Knowledge of pharmacology indications for drug usage and related adverse reactions

Knowledge of ancillary testing (laboratory, X-ray, EKG)

Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology

Understanding of coding practices and official guidelines

Experience with PC, mainframe applications, and encoding systems

Strong process management skills
