OPS Laboratory Technician I

The Biology Section in the FDEP Laboratories is accepting applications for a part-time OPS Laboratory Technician I position.

Part-time hours constitute a minimum of 20 up to a maximum of 29.75 hours per workweek during regular business hours. The 5-day workweek begins on a Friday and includes the following Monday through Thursday.

Summary of Duties:

A FDEP Laboratories, Biology Section OPS Laboratory Technician I assists in producing high quality data to support the assessment of biological condition and water quality in Florida's streams, rivers, lakes, and estuaries.

Duties include receiving, preserving and preparing invertebrate and algal samples; sieving and using a microscope to sort aquatic organisms in invertebrate samples; preparing slide mounts of algal samples; assisting with the maintenance of algal cultures; cleaning laboratory glassware and sample containers; properly disposing of or recycling waste formalin; and performing data entry and verification.

Applicants must possess the essential KSAs and position requirements listed below. Applicants that possess the Preferred KSAs listed below and have an interest in biological and environmental sciences will be given preference. Applicants available to work Monday mornings will also be given preference.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Essential):

High school diploma or GED.

Knowledge of the basic concepts and principles of biology and scientific methods.

Ability to sit, stand and use a microscope for long periods of time.

Ability to complete repetitive tasks accurately and efficiently.

Ability to occasionally work with formalin and other chemicals while wearing basic laboratory personal protective apparel.

Ability to determine and follow work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments within a given deadline.

Ability to accurately track and record data.

Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations.

Proficiency in computer skills and ability to functionally use Microsoft Office software; internet resources; laboratory information systems; or other computer programs.

Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to laboratory testing and analysis, including laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and QA/QC procedures.

Ability to think and work independently, as well as part of a team.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Preferred):

14. Education and major coursework in biology, environmental science or related ecological science, preferably from the pursuit or receipt of a degree in one of these areas from an accredited college or university.

15. Experience following technical instructions relating to laboratory testing and analysis.

16. Experience using laboratory equipment including but not limited to dissecting microscopes, hotplates, drying ovens, vacuum pumps, autoclaves, or formalin recyclers.

17. Training or experience on Microsoft Word, Excel, Laboratory Information Management Systems or other computer programs.

18. Experience performing basic arithmetic calculations.
