GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Coding Manager and according to established policies and procedures, assigns ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 codes to Emergency Department and referred and recurring outpatient medical records for statistical and billing purposes. Performs other clerical functions as necessary.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4, codes all diagnoses and procedures for Emergency Department and selected referred/recurring outpatient medical records. Assembles and matches loose filing to Emergency Department records. Data entry of codes and other abstracted information in to Medical Center's computerized abstracting database as necessary.

2. Using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4, codes and enters Clinic and selected referred/recurring outpatient medical records.

3. Maintains controls for accurate and timely Emergency Department and outpatient coding to meet billing deadlines and requirements. Follows up on locating missing records on a weekly basis. Interacts with all ancillary departments when necessary to obtain required diagnostic information.

4. As needed, performs other clerical duties associated with medical record coding, record processing, and department coverage.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:

1. Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of an Associate's Degree in medical record technology, or certificate in coding program and/or course work in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding.

2. Minimum one year of ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding experience. ART or CCS preferred.

1. Normal office environment.
