Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies. While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. The incumbent must also be trained and must maintain training certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates. Obtain certification in Maintenance of Traffic - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.

This position requires a valid Class 'B' driver's license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;

any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;

a suspension or revocation of the driver's license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and

a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver's license confirmed. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities. Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.

Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.

Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.

Performs Maintenance of Traffic control.

ABILITY TO: READ AND UNDERSTAND JOB-RELATED MATERIALS AND FILL OUT REPORTS AND FORMS; MAINTAIN AND REPAIR HIGHWAYS, BRIDGES AND/OR OTHER HIGHWAY STRUCTURES; COMMUNICATE BOTH VERBALLY AND IN WRITING, INCLUDING FOLLOWING ORAL/WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS; DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS; LIFT, CARRY, AND HANDLE UP TO 50 POUNDS; STOOP, CLIMB, SQUAT, PUSH, PULL, CRAWL OR BEND ON A FREQUENT BASIS; WORK OUTDOORS IN VARIOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS, ON VARIOUS TERRAINS AND AT VARIOUS HEIGHTS OR IN HIGH VOLUME TRAFFIC; STAND FOR A EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. ABILITY TO OPERATE MOTOR VEHICLES AND OTHER MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT.
