Practice Coder I
General Summary:
The Practice Coder 1 is responsible for reviewing physician and/or physician extender documentation in addition to practice charge capture tool in order to code and bill for professional services provided.
Responsible for validation of ICD-9, CPT and HCPCS codes as submitted by providers in addition to the performance of assigning codes as deemed necessary from the review of the providers documentation.
Ability to organize and bill appropriate codes according to medical documentation in order to comply with CMS specific guidelines for all carriers, third party reimbursement policies, regulations and accreditation guidelines.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
Must be willing to take a pre-employment exam. Must be able to pass exam w/ a min. score of 90% in order to proceed w/ recruitment process
Accurately and efficiently access practice and hospital information systems in order to secure and assemble all necessary physician and/or physician extender records so as to accurately code and bill professional services.
Review medical records and code physician and/or physician extender services utilizing current ICD-9, CPT and HCPCS classification systems.
Verify billable physician services by the review of physician and/or physician extender documentation.
Submits any issues or trends found within documentation of a particular physician and /or physician extender to assigned senior level practice coder, coding operations manager or practice manager.
Assembles and inputs coding results into the current practice management billing system in order to expedite compliant and proper billing.
Balances daily charges by checking provider, place of service, date of service, referring physician, diagnosis and procedures.
Collaborates with members of the specialty team to monitor and satisfy corporate financial goals within their specialty.
Interact with the Corporate Billing Office to ensure appropriate and complete follow up of patient accounts in order to maximize reimbursement.
Communicate effectively with physicians, physician extenders, practice manager, coding operations manager, members of the process improvement team and other leadership team members.
Utilize resource materials available appropriately in order to support accurate coding practices
Maintain patient confidentiality
Demonstrate effective and proper communication skills both verbal and written
Provide date for productivity analysis as needed
Maintain 90% accuracy rate
Participate in meeting practice/departmental goals
Maintain productivity standards
Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development through educational programs, research, etc.
Maintain certification status
Must pass a Pre-Employment Drug Screening, Criminal History Check, and Professional Reference Check
Required Education/Experience:
High school graduate or equivalent
Computer/typing literacy
Minimum of one year coding or billing experience in professional or physician practice coding
Thorough knowledge of ICD9, CPT, and HCPCS coding techniques as evidenced by results of coding skills test
Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy
Completion of coding certification program required
Licensure, Certification, and Registration:
One of the following national certifications REQUIRED:
Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A) through the American Academy of Professional Coders renewed every year
Certified Profession Coder (CPC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders renewed every year
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) renewed every year
Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P) through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) renewed every year
