BON SECOURS BALTIMORE HEALTH SYSTEMPOSITION SUMMARY The post anesthesia nurse is responsible for maintaining the continuity of care designed to meet the individual patient needs through the nursing process involving assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of patient care. The nurse assesses the physiological, psychosocial, cultural, religious, and age specific needs of patients throughout the post anesthesia care period. The PACU nurse's plan of care is designed to meet the needs based on received anesthesia, procedure, stability of body systems, desired outcome, and plan of discharge according to ASPAN standards and hospital policy through on-going assessment and intervention. The position requires the ability to set priorities, in collaboration with the anesthesia team, surgeon, and other health team members, while rendering care, directing, delegating, and supervising multiple patient care activities to obtain an optimal patient outcome. Post anesthesia nursing involves both professional and technical components of nursing practice which includes all skills of a med-surgical nurse, critical care knowledge and skills, assistance with surgical bedside procedures, management, assistance, and knowledge of anesthesia procedures and modalities, care of invasive lines, and education of patients and family, and preparation of patient for discharge. Post anesthesia nurses may also provide evidence of clinical excellence through attending education opportunities, continual learning, competencies and programs, attending staff meetings and mandates, formulating quality indicators and competencies, giving in-services, and mentoring/precepting, The PACU nurse also anticipates and performs tasks that help provide a safe work environment for themselves, staff and patients. In addition to the nursing process, the nurse requires demonstrated skills to prevent and control infection, prevent injury and prioritize nursing care to meet patient specific needs for the post anesthesia phase. JOB REQUIREMENTS 1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current licensure in Maryland. 2. BCLS/ ACLS trained.3. At least 1-3 years of critical care experience or clinical excellence in med-surg nursing4. Previous PACU experience preferred An essential function of this position is to comply with BSHSI Policy (SYS.HR.NUR.001) which requires, as a condition of employment, that all registered nurses with diplomas or associate degrees who apply and are hired after May 1, 2015 complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree within five years of start date.
