Position Summary:

Responsible for implementing and maintaining a compliance plan for outpatient coding and reimbursement. The Outpatient Coding auditor will assist the Manager of Outpatient and Emergency Coding Services, with the development of policies and procedures. Will develop education and training programs regarding elements of the HIM Compliance program, such as appropriate documentation and accurate coding, to all appropriate personnel, including HIM coding staff, physicians, billing personnel and ancillary departments.Coordinates and conducts continual reviews, tracking and trending following the outpatient coding audits.

Special Skills: Must be well versed in all regulatory compliance requirements such as CMS. The interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of department personnel, other departments, physicians and individuals from outside the Hospital. Understanding of billing or collections in a healthcare setting. Detail knowledge and understanding of reimbursement of government payer methodologies (APCs, CCI/OCE edits, medical necessity). Knowledge and mechanics of the hospital CDM. HCPCS data set knowledge, including CPT and HCPCS coding. Must be able to use standard office equipment and information systems. Understanding of the facilities information technology systems. Ability to interact with other employees through effective communication regarding audits and ongoing issues identified.

Minimum Education:

Graduate of an approved Health Information Technology/Management program or AHIMA Independent Study which meets the requirements for certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Nurse (RN) or High School Diploma or equivalent GED for the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Minimum Experience:

Minimum of 5 years experience working in an acute care hospital.

Required Certification:

Current Certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Nurse (RN).
