Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services is the only freestanding, full-service psychiatric hospital in the Birmingham area. We treat mental illness, emotional problems and adults with chemical dependency.

Hill Crest BHS currently has a Milieu Nurse (LPN) position available. The Licensed Practical Nurse will float to all nursing areas as designated on a consistent basis (not excluding non-nursing areas as needed). The LPN for float status will be assigned specific other duties when not working in direct patient care and assigned as a nurse on a nursing unit.

Duties and Accountabilities:

Assists the Registered Nurse in planning patient care. Provides nursing care based on the patient's nursing care plan under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. Observes patient behavior and notifies appropriate staff. Assists in maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment that respects patients' rights. Assists the physician with physical exams. Assists patients with activities of daily living, encouraging independent behavior when appropriate. Collects routine urine specimens, clean catch urine specimens, stool specimens, and sputum specimens take temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure counts and weighs patients as directed by a Registered Nurse. Assists patients during mealtime, observes and records intake. Remains in patient areas whenever possible to assist patients and visitors. Sets limits on patients' behavior per program guidelines with the assistance of the Registered Nurse when appropriate. Participates in staff development and attends annual in-service as required. Attends unit staff meetings (at least 10 per year). Assumes responsibility for personal continuing education and development needs. Assists with patient trips outside the hospital. Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer of patient. Therapeutically intervenes to decrease panic of disturbed patients. Safely prepares, administers, and monitors results of medications, excluding IV's under the supervision of a Registered Nurse as requested. Develops a therapeutic relationship with assigned patients. Completes rounds and observes precautions and documents. Serves as a role model for other staff and patients. Assesses patients' physical needs. LPN must have credentials to direct physical management of the patient and have current CPR certification. Applies restraints and notifies the patient's physician for orders as soon as possible per policies and procedures. Ensures that patients and families are oriented to the hospital and the unit and program. As requested. Collaborates with members of other disciplines. Observes patient behavior for changes in order to intervene therapeutically, guide non-professional nursing staff, communicate changes to appropriate staff, and record changes. Demonstrates awareness of unit policies to include contraband and sharps, search policy, and understands significance of enforcing these policies to promote a safe, drug-free environment. Follows polices and procedures. Assists with the staffing process for nursing units as directed by the designated nurse manager, including time sheets and payroll issues. Assists with reviewing all the staffing schedules and informing managers of potential overtime issues then assists managers in making necessary changes as directed by the managers. Reviews MTP's on a regular basis to assure nursing issues are present and are up to date. Make changes to plan as appropriate as directed by the Registered Nurse.. Adheres to all policies and procedures of the hospital including OSHA 29 C.F.R. Part 1910.1030 Bloodborne Pathogens, including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Performs all temporary duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing. Current status as a licensed practical nurse in the state of Alabama. Demonstrates knowledge of normal growth and development of the population served. New hires must be able to attend 1 week of New Employee Orientation on day shift, normally 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday through Friday. Must pass background and drug screen.
