Job Description
PURPOSE:
The Nurse Practitioner is responsible to oversee the quality of care delivered to his/her patients. Asses clinical appropriateness for admission and collaborate with Intake / Admissions regarding potential admissions. Perform psychiatric assessments for individuals under his/her care. Complete documentation necessary to address patients hospitalized under civil commitment statues. Provide individual therapy, family therapy and/or medication management as needed for patients under his/her care. Appropriately request consultations when indicated and provide psychiatric consultations when requested.

Maintain education and development appropriate for position
Complete position responsibilities by following established guidelines and protocols within the appropriate time frame
Demonstrate strong clinical assessment skills and knowledge of crisis intervention procedures
Knowledge of family and group therapy techniques
If working with Children (age group 4-13), Adolescents (age group 14-17) or Gero-Psychiatric patients (age group 55 or above) must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training.
Must complete all required / mandatory in-services annually
Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray tri-annually thereafter
Patient Care
Coordinate care with referral sources and other involved professionals
Maintain regular communication with family members as appropriate
Return phone calls to professionals and family in a timely manner
Encourage patients to participate fully in all aspects of the treatment program
Educate all patients, whenever possible, about ways to facilitate recovery
Follow safety practices as outlined in Provo Canyon Behavioral Hospital policies and procedures
Follow the protocol and guidelines of the inpatient phase program and other formal treatment programs
Help patients benefit from their insurance by timely completion of all paperwork, returning phone calls, and actively participating in utilization management
Medical Records
Complete assessments and reports within specified time lines
Chart each relevant contact related to the patient on day of contact
Chart entries should record the patient's response to treatment, current mental status, progress in the program, and need for continued treatment if appropriate
Professionalism and Ethics
Be dependable, punctual, accountable and use time productively
Be prompt to meetings
Contribute to the positive image and reputation of the company
Make contributions to improvement of Provo Canyon Behavioral Hospital treatment programs on a regular basis
Participate on committees and help with projects as requested
Extend energy in the community towards education and prevention
Be familiar with and implement Provo Canyon Behavioral Hospital treatment program guidelines
Acquire and maintain knowledge regarding the patient population served
Be aware of personal limitations and seek help accordingly
Maintain proper boundaries with patients and teach them to do likewise
Treat patients, staff members, professionals and family members with respect and courtesy
Discuss rights of confidentiality with patients and maintain confidentiality of patient information
Teachability
Initiate opportunities to receive feedback and help
Accept constructive criticism and feedback and use it to improve performance
Be responsive to direction and follow through on assigned tasks

Attend in-service and staff training meetings
Attend medical department meeting and support other physicians and treatment modalities
Attend Inpatient Treatment Team Meetings and actively participate in treatment planning for all patients

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of 2 years' experience in mental health
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to communicate effectively with patients, their families, staff and others
Ability to effectively utilize communication equipment
Physical agility to manage patients (ambulatory, non-ambulatory and physically aggressive)
Ability to read (i.e. patient charts, written communication, regulations, written policies and procedures, etc.)
Ability to write (i.e. manual charting, written communication, etc.)
Must be able to observe patient behaviors and write notes in medical charts
Must be able to physically assist or restrain patients in compliance with the restraint policy
Ability to sit for long periods of time, up to 8 hours
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
Ability to reach above and below the waist, turn, twist and manipulate small tools (copier, computer, telephone, calculator, safe, fax machine, etc.)
Ability to move frequently in the completion of job requirements
Ability to handle a variety of repetitive tasks
Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks under deadlines and with short notice
Education / Experience:
Graduate of an accredited nursing school
Board Certification Preferred
Licensed as a Psychiatric/Mental Health APRN or Psychiatric Mental Health Certified Nurse Specialist - Board Certified (PMHCNS-BC)
Prior experience in a hospital based psychiatric practice and outpatient psychiatric practice preferred
Must maintain active status with medical staff
Maintain current professional license
Where applicable, maintain current liability insurance
