Camp Coordinator YMCA Camp Cooper at the Michiana Family YMCA

Camp Description YMCA Camp Cooper is located at the Michiana Family YMCA on the St. Joseph River in South Bend, Indiana (between the Farmer’s Market and IUSB). We build self-esteem and encourage collaboration through activities such as archery, swimming in our heated pool, arts and crafts, soccer, basketball, fishing, weekly Field Trips and so much more. YMCA Camp Cooper strives to be a camp community that encourages achievement, belonging, and positive relationships. Our focus is to keep our campers engaged physically, mentally, and emotionally throughout the summer months.



Job Description: Mandatory Training Dates:



May 7th – All Day   May 9th-12th –* 6:30p-10pm Saturday May 11th & 21st – All Day May 17th, 19th, 2th, 26th, and 31st – 6:30p-10pm June 2nd – 6:30p-10p Sunday, June 5th - 3pm-6pm



Camp Dates: June 6th, 2016 – August 11th, 2016



Wage: $9.00-10.00 per hour Qualifications




  • Minimum age of 21

  • Experience with School Age Children and/or related activities required.

  • 1+ year supervising staff

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Integrity, patience, adaptability, sense of humor, enthusiasm, and a commitment to serve youth.

  • Ability to positively motivate, support and connect with campers; perform duties as specified in job description and by supervisor; communicate openly with supervisor; relate well to parents and other staff; behave as an appropriate positive role model in all camp activities.

  • Sensitivity to the needs of families including adults and children.

  • Current 1st aid & CPR for duration of the season strongly preferred. 1st Aid & CPR training provided .

  • YMCA required trainings including Child Abuse Prevention training, incident reporting, bullying, and others seen fit by the Director of Youth Development.



Physical Demands:




  • Ability to lead and participate in activities.

  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.



Essential Functions




  • Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety and our YMCA values.

  • Model the values and philosophy of the YMCA with campers, parents, and other staff in a positive and professional manner consistent with the personnel policies and mission of the YMCA of Michiana, Inc.

  • Connect with each camper quickly, and make campers feel welcome and included. Treat every camper fairly and equally regardless of circumstances and abilities, making each feel good about themselves and encouraging a fun environment.

  • Devotion to ensuring the safety and growth of campers. Accentuate positive attributes nurturing the whole; physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. Give praise for effort.

  • Partner with parents via phone communication and in-person meetings when needed.

  • Help facilitate and execute the daily schedule.

  • Create staff schedule and manage staff time off.

  • Help plan and execute Day Camp Staff Training.

  • Seek out and use camp resources, to create meaningful experiences for campers.

  • Work proactively with individuals and groups each day showing spontaneity & creativity.

  • Recognize individual and group situations and effectively resolve conflicts based on camp values and procedures.

  • Balance camp standards and expectations with flexibility to create a safe environment while seizing opportunities to create unique experiences.

  • Be a supportive, constructive member of our camp community actively working to create a positive and quality experience for all campers and staff.

  • Actively work to continue improving your skills – be open to feedback (+ & -) from supervisors.

  • Plan and execute weekly staff meetings as required. Participate in trainings as required.

  • Return from time off, prepared to join the program and work with kids, when expected.

  • Notify a supervisor personally and in a timely manner if you are unable to meet your commitment. This includes illness and extenuating circumstances.

  • Assume other responsibilities as mutually agreed upon with a supervisor.

  • Consult Staff Manual for additional “All Staff” responsibilities, qualifications, and personnel policies.

  • Seek help and support with situations that are unfamiliar or need further explanation/training.



Day Camp Responsibilities:




  • Support day camp staff team and objectives.

  • Help Interview and Hire Summer Day Camp Staff

  • Run and develop Staff Training for Day Camp Staff

  • Maintain open communication and proactively work to build strong relationships with leaders, other Coordinators, and Director.

  • Complete honest, appropriate and thorough Weekly Camper Reports.

  • Manage/Supervise/Support day campers throughout their program day.

  • Develop/run activities with your group of day campers and support unit/all-camp activities.

  • Help campers that need extra support.

  • Collect and file weekly paperwork.

  • Complete and organize incident reports.

  • Be visible and around camp during transition times to assist where needed and to supervise campers.

  • Plan and coordinate unit and collaborating camp programs as needed

  • Add creativity and variety with the help of the day camp director and other camp staff.



Safety:




  • Follow and enforce all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.

  • Double-check the clothing safety of all participants for jewelry, gum, and clothing violations that can result in injury.

  • Know the location of the first aid kit, nearest phone, and incident reports. Current certification in CPR and First Aid preferred.

  • Provide 1st aid and CPR if necessary and compliant with level of training.

  • Ensure emergency procedures are followed, and notify supervisor of any incidents and accidents immediately.

  • Maintain personal health (washing hands, getting enough sleep, healthy time off behavior, etc) and model positive health behaviors for campers.

  • Manage stress and use positive techniques for reducing stress. To respond quickly and effectively to situations, including emergencies.



Additional duties:




  • Model our YMCA values through fun, positive relationships with staff and members. Seek every opportunity to encourage, motivate and thank fellow staff members for their work.

  • Be enthusiastic toward members and staff by learning their names and expressing an interest in their YMCA activities. Strive to enrich their YMCA experience by introducing them to new programs, staff, members and volunteer activities.

  • Incorporate “Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility” into all aspects of the position, to ensure YMCA values are being integrated into our culture and programs.

  • Maintain a consistent professional image through dress, actions and relationships with others. Speak enthusiastically on behalf of the YMCA at given opportunities.
