POSITION SUMMARY:
Sets up and operates numerical control machine (CNC) and other machines to cut, shape, or form metal work pieces to specifications.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Reviews setup sheet and specifications to determine setup procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished work piece.
- Works from prints, sketches, drawing, shop routings, machine tapes, machining procedures, shop practices, engineering and other information.
- Attaches fixture to machine bed and positions and secures work piece in fixture according to set up instructions.
- Assemble cutting tools as specified.
- Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point.
- Changes cutting tools and location of work piece during machining process as specified in set up instructions.
- Measures work piece for conformance to specification, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, dial indicators, and gauges.
- Adjust machine feed and speed and change cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunction.
- Operates all equipment in accordance with established operational procedures, safety procedure, shop practice and sequences. Anticipates problems and prevents damage and scrap by taking appropriate precautionary care.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- 2 to 5 years of prior CNC set up and operating experience.
- Can read and understand engineering (part) drawings and tool designs.
- Good working knowledge of shop math.
- Can read and understand plannings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Able to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
- Able to exert 20 to 50 lbs. of force frequently
- Subject to high noise levels from operating machines
- Physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts.
- Breathing fumes, dust, and mist.
- Skin exposure to oils and cutting fluid.
