INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
- Current Junior or Senior at a recognized University
- Majoring in Tourism Management, Hotel Management, Recreation, Leisure Services or a related field
- Previous experience in a recreation setting
- Experience in providing customer service
- First Aid and CPR certified before the first day of employment
- Red Cross Certified Lifeguard
- CPO Certification recommended
- Preference is given to Resort and Commercial Recreation Association (RCRA) members
2016 SUMMER INTERNSHIP SESSION
Summer: May 11th - September 9th; 2 interns selected
Holiday work is mandatory; requesting time off during an internship session must be discussed during the hiring process.
JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibility of a recreation intern is to accomplish personal and professional goals, along with providing superior customer service to guests. Interns will maximize their educational background with hands on experience and unique, once in a lifetime opportunities. All key areas of the recreation department will be explored to better understand the fundamentals of how a high end, resort recreation department is run. All tasks performed by interns will follow and maintain Salamander Resort and Spa’s standards and core values. The average work week is between 35-45 hours, including weekend work.
Orientation Week: A week designed to introduce interns to all segments of their internship, Salamander Resort and Spa property and the Village of Middleburg. This week consists of the following:
- Walking/driving tour of the property/Village of Middleburg
- Salamander Resort and Spa orientation focusing on resort standards, resort facilities and organizational structure
- Recreation teambuilding activities to get to know co-workers, supervisors, and managers
- Introduction of intern expectations, responsibilities and assignments
Camp Salamander: Camp Salamander is a program for kids 4-10 years old. Camp Salamander is a place where children come to make friends and memories of their own. Camp Salamander is a large part of the internship program. As interns you will have the following Camp Salamander responsibilities:
- Work with professionals in developing new activities, games and themes
- Play an integral role as a Camp Salamander counselor
- Facilitate programs and ensure the day remains structured
- Create a unique, safe, and enjoyable experience for all Campers
Fitness Center Operations: Salamander Resort and Spa’s fitness center is a unique amenity that seamlessly ties together the Recreation and Spa departments. Not only does Salamander’s Fitness Center provide guests with an unmatched Resort workout facility, it also serves as an information hub for Recreation, Spa, Fitness, and equestrian activities, houses the indoor pool/dry sauna, is the Camp Salamander drop-off/pick-up location, and is home to the Spa Café.
Fitness Center Responsibilities:
- Give guided tours of the fitness center
- Provide Guests with information on Recreation, Equestrian, Spa and fitness activities
- Display Excellent customer service techniques when interacting with guests
- Assisting Fitness Center guests with any problem and/or request they may have ? Set up/break down spa café for private events or Camp Salamander
- Make fitness class or Recreation Activity reservations using Spa Soft reservation software
- Professionally answer phone calls at the Fitness Center desk.
Outdoor Family Pool: Salamander Resort and Spa has an outdoor family pool that will be open Memorial Day through the end of September. Below are some of the main responsibilities interns are responsible for:
- Provide exceptional guest service to all guests of the pool according to our aspiring Forbes and AAA standards.
- Play an integral role as a lifeguard
- Play an integral role as a pool attendant
- Communicate with Food staff to ensure guests receive superior service.
- Assist with Basketball, tennis, and bicycle rentals at the pool along with providing information about our bike paths to our guests
Group, Teen and Family Programs: Salamander Resort and Spa offers many unique group, teen and family programs throughout the week. These programs range from corporate groups, family crafts, poolside games, bingo and family festivals. Below are some of the main responsibilities interns are responsible for:
- Plan, organize, and run programs expecting anywhere from 50 - 400 guests
- Communicate with other resort departments, such as Food and Beverage and
- Engineering to ensure the event runs smoothly
- Fully understand and become comfortable leading all group, teen and family events within the recreation department
Office Operations: Upon completion of their internship, interns will understand and succeed with the following behind the scene operations of our recreation department:
- Budgets and checkbooks
- Computer reservation software
- Ordering supplies
- Complete program recaps
- Charging system for guests payment
Holiday and Special Events: Each internship session takes place during a holiday or special event on the island. Interns are very involved in the creating, planning and implementation of these events.
Summer - 4th of July Week
SPECIAL PROJECTS/MEETINGS/FIELD TRIPS
Major Project and Assignments: Interns must successfully complete a special project during their internship. This assignment is designed to give interns the freedom to plan and implement a program of their own. If a university also requires a special project, efforts will be made to coincide the two projects. Interns will also serve as a supervisor for 2 weeks. One week focusing on Camp Salamander, the other on Group, Teen and Family events. Interns will also be assigned monthly assignments that will be covered in more detail during the orientation process.
Meetings: Interns are required to meet with the Director on a weekly basis. These meetings are used for evaluation and problem solving. Participation during all meetings is mandatory.
Job Shadowing: Interns have the opportunity to meet several department managers and directors during their internship. Departments such as Food & Beverage, Sales & Marketing, Human Resources, Conference Services, Front Desk, Property Management. Interns are encouraged to set up job shadowing appointments on their own for exposure to other areas of Salamander Resort and Spa if interested.
STIPEND/MEALS/UNIFORMS
Pay Rate: Interns receive a taxable hourly wage of $12.00/hour. In addition, service charge and gratuity is added when working corporate events and Camp Salamander. When working these events, tips are split evenly between the staff working.
Meals: Employee meal tickets may be purchased for $3.00 and used at the Service Professional Dining Room.
Uniforms:
- Uniform shirt*
- Khaki Shorts
- Bathing suit/ swim trunks*
- Tennis shoes – gray or black (nothing too loud)
- * Items that are provided
Appearance:
- Hair must be a natural color and conservatively cut.
- Males are expected to shave on a daily basis.
- Females may wear only one pair of earrings in the traditional location, males are not allowed piercings
- No visible tattoos
